OTHER NOTEWORTHY STATS
– In four starts this season, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has passed for 838 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 69.2 percent of his throws. He has been more accurate with the football of late and has a completion percentage of 81.8 (27-of-33) for his last two games to bring his year-long percentage up to sixth in the SEC.
Milroe is tied for the league lead in yards per attempt (10.7), which is also fourth nationally, and is second in passer rating (177.17). His four rushing scores are tied for fourth in the SEC.
– Crimson Tide running back Jase McClellan is the team’s leading rusher entering the month of October. In the first five games, McClellan ran for 326 yards and three touchdowns on 67 carries. He ranks among the top 10 in the SEC in several categories, including attempts (5th), attempts per game (13.4, 6th), rushing yards (8th) and rushing yards per game (65.2, 9th).
– Sophomore tight end Amari Niblack led Alabama with three catches for 61 yards in its win at Mississippi State, and that gave Niblack 158 yards and three touchdowns on two catches in the first five weeks of the 2023 campaign. An obvious mismatch player, Niblack is third on the Tide’s offense in receiving yards, but he is currently fourth among all SEC tight ends.
– The Alabama defense intercepted three passes in its road win over the Bulldogs, with linebacker Chris Braswell returning his interception for a 28-yard touchdown. That was the first non-offensive score of the season for UA and the 91st such play of the Saban era.
It also marked the first game an Alabama defense has recorded three interceptions since its last trip to Starkville on Oct. 16, 2021. After Week 5, the Tide now has six interceptions on the year, which is tied for fourth place in the SEC and is one shy of the seven INTs Alabama had in 2022. UA is also up to +4 in turnover margin, good for second place in the SEC.
– Safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Jihaad Campbell were responsible for the other two picks over the weekend. Downs recorded 13 tackles in his first road start in an SEC game, marking a new career-high and moving his year-long total to 40 tackles. Downs now has 10 more tackles than any of his teammates and has the fifth-most tackles among SEC players.
– With four more sacks in Saturday’s win, the Tide defense is up to 17 through five games. That is tied for the third-most in the conference. None of the four sacks came from Braswell or Dallas Turner, but Turner still leads the league with 5.5 sacks while Braswell is tied for sixth with 3.5. Two of UA’s next three foes top of the SEC (Tennessee, 22; Texas A&M, 20).
Texas A&M also leads the SEC in tackles for loss with 49, which is 12 more than Alabama’s 37 (T-3rd). Aggies linebacker Edgerrin Cooper is the only SEC player with double-digit tackles for loss (10). Turner is third with 7.5 TFLs, while Braswell is tied for ninth with 5.5.
– Placekicker Will Reichard made four field goals and four extra points in his latest outing. He is perfect on kicks in his final season, going 11-for-11 on field-goal tries and 21-for-21 on points after touchdowns. Reichard is one of four SEC kickers with at least 1.0 field goal per game and is 100 percent on attempts. With 16 points against State, the fifth-year senior moved up to eighth on the NCAA all-time scoring list with 474 points. The record is 530.
– Alabama punter James Burnip punted three times for 160 yards in Starkville. His first punt of the night was a 67-yarder that was downed at the 1-yard line, which brought his average for the game up to 53.3 yards per punt. On the season, Burnip is averaging 48.91 yards per attempt, which is second in the SEC behind Vanderbilt’s Matthew Hayball (50.91) but good for fourth in the entire nation among punters averaging 3.6 punts per game this season.
