Southern Miss provided the injury on Saturday, homering their way to a 7-2 win over Auburn in an elimination game on Saturday in the NCAA tournament at the Auburn Regional. But then the victors made sure to add some insult.
Following the win, Southern Miss took to Twitter and delivered a body shot on top of the KO they’d put together on the diamond. A tough day all around for the Tigers.
“WAR DAMN GOLDEN EAGLE,” the account wrote.
And Auburn made some history on Saturday, just not the kind that ends up in a dark wooden trophy case. With the los to Southern Miss, the regional hosts were eliminated after just two games in the postseason.
According to the ESPN broadcast, it’s on the third time that the Tigers have fallen out of the NCAA tournament in just two games. The only other times: 1963 and 2002. Not a sterling mark to add to the season notes.
Things got ugly early for Auburn
Southern Miss took a 3-0 lead over No. 12 Auburn in the first inning of the elimination game in the Auburn Regional at the NCAA baseball tournament.
Christopher Sargent took one to right field and watched it float out of the ballpark for a three-run bomb. It looked like a routine fly ball but it kept carrying.
Southern Miss struck first in a do-or-die game against the Tigers.
Over the course of this season, Sargent batted .256, hit 12 home runs, had 40 RBI, 57 hits and scored 42 runs.
It was not the best start for Auburn, which lost its opener Friday night to Penn 6-3, in extra innings.
“I give all the credit in the world to Penn,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said postgame. “We knew they had a high-level pitching staff. We just didn’t get enough hits. We couldn’t link up enough offensively to keep pace.”
It’s the second time Auburn’s been trolled on the weekend, too
Penn upset regional host Auburn to open NCAA Tournament action on Friday. The 2023 Ivy League champions wasted no time trolling the Tigers their most iconic celebration calls of all time.
“PENN’S GONNA WIN THE BASEBALL GAME!!! PENN’S GONNA WIN THE BASEBALL GAME!!!” the team’s social media account tweeted in place of the final score. The excitement in the tweet was due to the nature of the win — a 6-3 win in the 11th inning.
The call is an obvious reference to Auburn’s ‘Kick Six‘ call from the late Rod Bramblett. Chris Davis infamously ran a missed field goal back 109 yards as time expired to break the 28-28 tie and give the Tigers the victory over Alabama in the 2013 Iron Bowl.
