South Carolina PFF grades at the bye week: defense
South Carolina’s bye week is quickly ending, the final days of it now as the Gamecocks reconvene Sunday to begin Florida prep.
With the Gamecocks taking a breather, it’s time to take a look at the PFF grades through the first five games continuing with the defense.

The highest-graded defender regardless of snap counts is Terrell Dawkins, who has a 75 overall grade in 26 total snaps. His pass rush grade of 78.8 in 11 pass rush snaps helps boost that overall grade.
Jalon Kilgore is the best contributor grades-wise with a 74.3 overall grade in 302 defensive snaps this season. Kilgore has an 81.7 rush defense grade and an 87.4 tackling grade.
Pup Howard is third among scholarship defenders with a 73.3 overall grade in 70 snaps this season. That’s significantly boosted by an 84.2 tackling and an 80.1 rush defense grade.
A pair of defensive linemen follow him with Tyreek Johnson (108 snaps) and Tonka Hemingway (225 snaps). PFF gives them a 73.1 and a 72 overall grade, respectively.

Second-year defensive back Kajuan Banks comes in right after them at 71.6 overall this season over the course of 58 snaps. David Spaulding is just behind him at 71.5 overall in 37 snaps over three games.
TJ Sanders checks in with a 70 overall grade–headlined by a 79.4 tackling grade–while Marcellas Dial rounds out the top 10 with a PFF grade of 68.9. Dial does have a coverage grade fo 67.6 and at ackling grade of 78.9.
