South Carolina in contention for versatile transfer portal player

South Carolina in contention for versatile transfer portal player

On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported that former Utah Ute Mike Sharavjamts is considering South Carolina as his next destination via the transfer portal. According to Borzello, Sharavjamts is also considering SMU, Mississippi State, and Butler and could add Utah and San Francisco (two of his former schools) back to his list.

The first Mongolian ever to play Division-I basketball, Sharavjamts can do a little bit of everything on the court. He’s 6-9, can play virtually any position, is a long and solid athlete, and has a wide range of skills. While he’s not a big-time shooter, Sharavjamts can make enough shots from outside. He can score, especially at the rim, and he’s really good at taking a pass on the perimeter and immediately attacking off the dribble. Bigger than most guards and more athletic than most forwards, Sharavjamts can be a matchup nightmare if used correctly.

Sharavjamts has played three years of college ball and has played at three different schools. He began his career at Dayton before then playing one season at San Francisco and another at Utah. He has one final year of eligibility remaining.

South Carolina needs to find several impact players in the transfer portal. Earlier this week, Gamecock star Collin Murray-Boyles declared for the NBA Draft. Then, Treysen Eaglestaff, the team’s top transfer commitment, backed off from his pledge to USC.

As things stand, South Carolina has five open scholarship spots for head coach Lamont Paris to utilize. The Gamecocks have just one player (transfer portal signee Kobe Knox) on the potential roster right now who started more than 20 games last season.

Knox, Meechie Johnson, Christ Essandoko, and Elijah Strong are the four players committed to the Gamecocks out of the transfer portal this cycle. The Gamecocks have room to add a player at any spot.
