South Carolina football 2023 win total expectations

As May comes to an end, we’re less than 100 days away until a new season of South Carolina football kicks off.

But it’s usually around this time where talking season begins to pick up. That includes hearing more and more people start to ask the same question: How many wins do you think USC will have this season?

Like I said last year when I did a similar story, this isn’t gambling advice so don’t go off and bet your kid’s college savings on what I’m about to say. Although I was accurate with my projection last season so maybe you can help pay for a fifth-year for little Johnny if we hit again this year.

To cut to the chase, I have South Carolina winning between seven and eight games in the regular season. That could change as we get closer to fall camp once I start hearing more about how comfortable players are feeling with the new offensive system and how roles will look. But for now, I have them between seven to eight, not including a bowl game.

South Carolina exceeded many external expectations the past two seasons season. In year-one under Shane Beamer, USC won more games than they did combined in the two previous seasons. In year two, Vegas placed South Carolina’s over/under win total at 5.5. They finished with eight wins. This season, Vegas has set the bar at 6.5 wins.

While I’m sure some Gamecock fans will feel like that number is low, let’s take a step back. The reality is, South Carolina has one of the toughest schedules in 2023. Their non-conference slate, which starts off with a North Carolina team who will likely begin the year as a top-25 team, is as challenging as it’s been in recent years.

As I’ve always said, when playing a Power 5 team Week 1, anything can happen. And with playing at Georgia Week 3, USC could easily start the season, once again, 1-2. I hate talking hypotheticals but between the schedule and the unknowns about the offense with a new OC, a lot of new faces working together on the OL, and question marks at running back, how will this team respond if they get punched in the face early after an off-season with so much buzz? Like last year, this team can be special but it’ll come down to how they deal with the highs and lows.
