Sooners Commits Shine on Week 1 Tape

With the first full week of high school football in the bag it’s time to take a look at some of the more notable performances of the week. We’ve picked a handful of Future Sooners to take a look at who shined on tape. Not surprisingly there’s a considerable offensive feel withs ome big performances in week one.
Eli Bowen – 2024 – CB – Denton (Texas) Guyer
Breakdown: You shouldn’t be worried about Bowen’s size because he clearly isn’t. Of course his speed on the kick return comes as no surprise but look at him work through trash and pick up the ball carrier in space with a physical tackle. But it’s in coverage that Sooners clearly like his quick feet and instincts. Bowen comes up with one pick of his own, while in great position, before batting a ball in the air for an easy interception for a teammate.
Ivan Carreon – TE – 2024 – Odessa, Texas
Breakdown: I honestly feel like the first clip is an optical illusion. Look as he breaks that tackle near the 30 yard line. It looks like the corner from the sideline is going to track him down. But once you get a slightly different angle you realize how much ground Carreon is chewing up with every step. The second clip is something he makes look a lot easier than he is. It’s also something that to make that awkward a catch while running at full tilt and not breaking stride, you’ve got some high end athleticism. Carreon feels like a guy who may be due for a move up.
Dozie Ezukanma – 2024 – WR – Keller (Texas) Timber Creek
Breakdown: What I love here is watching Ezukanma make a corner pay for playing in such tight coverage. The Sooners summer time offer is one of those guys who has some surprising acceleration for having such length and stride. But the thing that coaches will love? Ezukanma has three plays in this reel where he’s maintaining blocks and creating space on the edge for his running back. Every time I see Ezukanma my opinion goes up.
Zion Ragins – 2024 – WR – Gray (Ga.) Jones County
Breakdown: Everyone knows that Ragins has speed for days, that’s not news to anyone. But the explosive Sooners commitment, on this tape, shows a lot of burst and natural agility laterally. Beyond all that he shows good vision to keep extending plays and giving himself a chance for more yardage.
Brendan Zurbrugg – 2024 – QB – Alliance, Ohio
Breakdown: With three quarterbacks committed we had to have some talk of one of them, right? Speaking of a guy whose athleticism isn’t getting it’s credit? The Sooners quarterback pledge at the 1:00 mark breaks through a few tackles before out sprinting 21 other players on his way to the end zone. But the more you watch him the more you appreciate his arm. He’s very sound and has a nice quick release.
