Sooners Commit David Stone is a 5-Star on Tape

Sooners Commit David Stone is a 5-Star on Tape

Oklahoma’s latest commitment is the one that Sooners fans have been waiting two years for, five star David Stone. The No. 2 defensive tackle in the country was offered by the Sooners more than two years ago and has been to Norman over and over again. But now that he’s in the boat what kind of talent does Todd Bates have headed his way? It’s time for SoonerScoop.com to break down what made Stone such a coveted target for Oklahoma.

What’s on Tape for David Stone

Stone is the type of unusual assignment that can keep offensive lineman up at night. Sure, he’s big, he’s quick, and he’s growing considerably more powerful as time goes by. But what makes him such a trouble? It’s the style he’ll bring to Norman, Okla.

The new Oklahoma commitment is one of those awkward defensive tackles who almost has a running back’s ability to slip through cracks and find ways into the backfield. Even when an offensive lineman thinks he’s ok, if he’s off balance or a little out of position, Oklahoma’s new commitment finds a way to take advantage. Over and over again offensive linemen wind up to deliver a good initial punch to Stone’s chest and again and again they can’t find their target. For lack of a better way to say it, it’s like trying to block Gumby.

The scary part is, as mentioned, this Gumby is 6-foot-5 and 270-pounds with the ability to run you over if you’re base isn’t solid. It’s a part of the Sooners new prize’s game that has really grown over the last 18 months, he’s much more capable of playing with power.

But still, there’s more. Stone uses his long arms to get blockers moving the wrong way and then uses his quick feet to head in the opposite direction. In short, he’s very good at creating space for himself to work and to move the pocket into the quarterback’s lap.

Stone, like a lot of long, angular defensive tackles needs to be better staying low. He’ll struggle for the Sooners when he runs into shorter offensive lineman who can set their feet and drive him off the spot.

But that’s something he can improve in time and when he does it’ll simply be another tool in his belt.

Sooners Commit Comparison

The Sooners pledge reminds me quite a bit of former Mississippi State All-American Jeffrey Simmons in his style. The question a few have is if he’ll run that hot, consistently.
