Sooners Changing Plans at Running Back?

Sooners Changing Plans at Running Back?

Oklahoma’s class of 2024 running back recruiting for quite some time has felt somewhat formulaic. The targets for Demarco Murray and the Sooners have stayed constant and receptive to the pitch. However, over the last few weeks it has felt as though Oklahoma has slipped somewhat with long-time target Caden Durham.

Following his official visit to Norman for the ChampUBBQ the Sooners finally seemed ready to close out their extended battle with LSU for his commitment. However, since then he has made a pair of trips to Baton Rouge and the Tigers look to have pushed the right buttons.

In fact it’s forced the issue of flipping my long-time prediction from the Sooners to LSU. Could that decision even come today?

If Oklahoma Misses on Durham, What’s Next?

However, it seems that Oklahoma is ready for this possibility. In fact it’s a reality that Murray and co. have may been preparing for since prior to Durham’s visit. On June 13 Bass, the do-it-all Oklahoma City Heritage Hall star, camped at Oklahoma and was outstanding while working at running back.

At the time Brent Venables did not offer Bass a scholarship but made it clear they had hopes to find room for him.

“It’s a preferred walk-on that’s going to turn into a scholarship by signing day. Coach V is waiting on some commitments from guys they offered way earlier,” Bass said at the time.

On Friday the Sooners spent a lot of time during the Party at the Palace clarifying their updated plans for Bass.

“I got to meet with Coach (Jeff) Lebby and Murray about their vision for me. I really enjoyed my time,” Bass said. “I’d be playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver depending on field positioning. I would be in different packages and there would be lots of motion to get me one-on-one.”

Obviously Oklahoma isn’t giving up on Durham and will continue to pursue the highly-talented running back. But should they need to find a different prospect to pair with their current commitments, Xavier Robinson and Taylor Tatum, they may already have an answer.
