Sooners and Casey Poe Make Late Change

Sooners and Casey Poe Make Late Change

As one of Oklahoma’s earliest offers along the offensive line Casey Poe has been a focal point of the Sooners plans in 2024. That effort was expected to culminate with the Sooners getting his final official visit, in late July. However, he and offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh realized that wasn’t going to be a possibility and a late change of plans was forced.

As such Poe had to reschedule his trip to Norman before his upcoming college decision on July 12. He spoke with SoonerScoop.com about how, and why, the change was required.

“It was a great visit! Unfortunately, with the new ruling not being passed until July 1, it could not be an official. In spite of that, we still had an amazing time and I got a lot of good one-on-one time with the players and coaches,” Poe explained. “The only reason I changed when the visit was planned was due to compliance. The last week of July is a dead week and coach B and I were not aware of that.”

Though the visit didn’t come off as initially planned the Sooners can still be a quality fit for Poe. In fact, immediately following the visit, he mentioned two things that helps Oklahoma stand out from the crowd.

“The biggest thing to me about OU is both coach B’s coaching and the SOUL mission. Coach B’s success in coaching speaks for itself. The SOUL mission program is something I feel is really unique to OU. It’s an amazing program to teach lessons and help men in a time in their life when it is most valuable and can be used for so much good,” he offered.

It’s More than Just Bedenbaugh for Sooners and Poe

While Bedenbaugh has been focal in Poe’s recruitment, Sooners head coach Brent Venables hit some key notes as well. He missed no opportunity to reiterate Poe’s importance to the class as well as the program in total.

“Coach V wanted me to know how special I could be for his program. He feels like I would fit in extremely well with the culture. He told me I was the type of guy to bring people up in a locker room to a higher standard of excellence,” he said.

Going into his LSU and Bama visits, that concluded his summer tour, Poe was clear that his recruitment remains open.

“It’s still a whirlwind, and I would say each school has an equal chance to land a commitment from me. I really am going to have to take some time and look deep to see who will be best for me and my future overall.”
