Snapshots of Tennessee’s Saturday workout

Snapshots of Tennessee’s Saturday workout

Following Thursday’s first scrimmage of the pre-season and an off-day on Friday, Tennessee was back on the practice field Saturday correcting mistakes from the scrimmage and moving forward towards Wednesday’s scrimmage.

Head coach Josh Heupel was pleased overall with scrimmage one highlighting the play of his quarterbacks Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava. He was also pleased with the tackling of his defense. But as every coach does, Heupel was quick to point out there’s plenty of growing to do with this team with the season opener just 21 days away.

We got a lot, lot ahead of us,” Heupel said following the scrimmage. “We gotta grow, and that starts this afternoon when they come back to us too. But all in all, really excited about what happened today.”

Plenty of focus remains on the offensive line who is without Cooper Mays. Senior Ollie Lane has stepped into that spot to take control of the offensive front.

“Ollie, really smart,” Heupel said. “Played a lot of football, has played multiple positions, was repped at the three interior spots since the time that we’ve gotten here. He’s been really good in communication, the mechanics, us being able to play with tempo the way that we want to when it presents itself. It’s been really easy for him to transition inside.”

With Lane inside, that means Addison Nichols is getting almost exclusive reps at guard where it seems he is the most comfortable. In addition to Nichols, Jackson Lampley is seeing an increased role at left guard.

Tennessee has been rotating a lot of guys into different spots along the offensive front but line coach said following the first scrimmage they will start to hone in on spots more in order to start creating more continuity.

Tennessee will practice again tomorrow morning as they prep for Wednesday’s second and likely final major scrimmage of fall camp.
