SMU Football Day 6 practice notebook

SMU Football Day 6 practice notebook

SMU Football had an off day on Sunday before returning to the practice field on Monday. The Mustangs had another competitive practice after some skirmishes on Saturday for Fan Day. Here are the takeaways from the latest practice on the Hilltop.

*** SMU’s defensive line was impressive on Monday especially. The group had some nice stops on runs up the middle, a great sign for the defensive line. Elijah Roberts in particular continued his strong play this fall camp with a big stop on a run.

*** Quarterback Preston Stone found wideout Moochie Dixon for a deep ball touchdown early in the team period. Dixon continues to make plays this fall camp and is squarely in the running for a starting job. Stone was intercepted though a few reps later by safety Bryan Massey, who had a strong practice overall including the interception. Stone did bounce back to find Jake Bailey on an absolute bullet over the middle.

*** Wide receiver Teddy Knox has been having a strong camp overall, working on the little things on his routes. He has tightened up his routes and it’s paid off. Knox made a great move on his release to get open on a slant in 1-on-1s. He caught a touchdown in 1-on-1s from Stone on a nice whip route at the goalline. Quarterback Kevin Henry-Jennings found him on a deep out route in the 7-on-7 period.

*** Wide receiver Jordan Hudson continues to come on as of late, catching a slant route for a touchdown from Henry-Jennings in the team portion. Hudson also had a nice grab in 7-on-7 from Stone on a strong slant route.

*** Henry-Jennings found wide receiver Roderick Daniels on a route in the zone, finding a good spot to sit down. Daniels continued his strong day in team with a touchdown catch from Stone in the redzone. Daniels hauled in a tough curl route on Jonathan McGill during 1-on-1s, coming back to the ball from Henry-Jennings to win the rep. Daniels caught a touchdown on a corner route as well and also settled in for another pickup over the middle of the field.

*** Running back Velton Gardner had a strong touchdown run up the middle as the second team offense scored on the second team defense. Fellow running back Tyler Lavine caught a swing route and took in for the score as he ran down the sidelines for the touchdown.

*** Wide receiver Key’Shawn Smith turned around Chris Megginson, getting open in the 1-on-1 period to catch a pass from Stone.

*** Safeties Isaiah Nwokobia and Kyron Chambers both had good reps against Daniels in 1-on-1s. Nwokobia had a nice breakup on an out route at the goalline while Chambers pressed Daniels and broke up a comeback route. Safety Brandon Crossley broke up an under route in 7-on-7 intended for Daniels from Stone. The defense had a solid day against SMU’s first team offense in 7-on-7.
