SMU Football Day 18 practice notebook

SMU Football held the final scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday ahead of school starting next week. Here are the takeaways from On The Pony Express from practice.

*** Quarterback Preston Stone hit H-Back Stone Eby for a touchdown off a play-action at the goalline.

*** Cornerback Kevaris Hall nabbed an interception off Stone, stealing it away from Moochie Dixon to make the play. Safety Ahmaad Moses intercepted Kevin Henry-Jennings for a pick-six on a bad decision by Henry-Jennings.

*** Henry-Jennings was able to bounce back with a nice redzone touchdown pass to freshman Adam Moore in the back of the endzone. Overall though, it was tough sledding for the offense’s passing game in the scrimmage as the defense was able to make plays.

*** Once again, it was running back Jaylan Knighton and Velton Gardner who impressed in a big way. Knighton got hit pretty good on a play, but is fine and will be back on Tuesday when the team gets back at it. LJ Johnson had some nice runs as well during the team portion.

*** In a situational period of the scrimmage with the second team offense backed up, the defense was able to force a safety.

*** Isaiah Smith made a play, grabbing a fumble on a bad exchange between Keldric Luster and a ball carrier. Smith had a solid day on Friday as well so he’s building some momentum toward the end of fall camp.

*** SMU’s first team defense in particular looked impressive during the scrimmage. Scott Symons’ unit was flying around and taking good angles to the ball. It’ll have to show it on the field this fall, but there’s a growing sense of optimism around the defense with some of the pieces they have to complement the first team unit. Rhett Lashlee said after practice that the first and second team defenses split the live tackling reps, going for about 40 plays each.
