SMU Fall Camp Notebook: First week of camp wraps up

SMU Fall Camp Notebook: First week of camp wraps up

SMU Football was back on the field Saturday for practice, wrapping up its first week before an off day on Sunday. Here are the takeaways from the media viewing portion.

*** After a couple of injury scares yesterday to Justin Osborne and Savion Byrd, both lineman were back out taking live reps today with no additional padding. Both players had to be helped off the field at practice yesterday, with the fear that the injuries to both players could be severe. The good news is, it seems like both players’ injuries were not nearly as concerning as first thought.

*** EDGE Isaiah Smith was making plays on defense today and edge coach, Sam Dunnam, was loving it. During one of the plays in tempo drill, Smith made a nice move inside to block the gap and not allow the back to go beyond the line of scrimmage.

*** The SMU defense upped their game today overall in the tempo drill. Just one day after quarterbacks went 100% passing the ball, the secondary was breaking up passes. Not only was the secondary making plays, the defensive front was much more of a force today. The D-line limited positive runs on numerous plays.

*** Quarterbacks Kevin Jennings and Preston Stone have been fluid in taking reps with the first and second teams. Jennings went 1/2 passing, completing a pass to Jake Bailey on a screen play. Though the pass was completed, the ball was slightly behind Bailey and the play would’ve gone down for a loss had SMU defense been able to make the full contact tackle. Jennings’ second throw was a shot down field looking for Romello Brinson which was broken up in coverage by AJ Davis.

*** Stone went 2/2 in the passing drill today. After his screen pass to Roderick Daniels, Jr. got blown up, Stone found Moochie Dixon across the middle for a gain of just over 10 yards.

*** SMU defensive tackle Mike Lockhart was another defender causing havoc on the line of scrimmage. During the tempo drill, Lockhart read the offense and delivered a hit on Jaylan Knighton in the backfield for a loss.

*** Linebacker Alexander Kilgore was also quick to react to the offense in the tempo drill. Stone threw a screen pass outside to Roderick Daniels Jr. and Kilgore read the play quickly and got out to RDJ to make the “tackle.”
