SMU Day 22 Fall Camp Practice Notebook
SMU Football technically wrapped up fall camp with its mock game coming on Thursday. Wednesday, the Mustangs were in the Armstrong Fieldhouse, getting some final work in before that.
Here are the takeaways from the last media availability before Week Zero.
*** With SMU’s game vs Nevada less than two weeks away, numerous coaches talked about wanting to have their starting players and rotations set in recent days.
For the offensive line, the starting five seems to be set. With Andrew Chamblee still not practicing, Nate Anderson looks to be the projected starter at right tackle for Nevada.
Jakai Clark continues to take reps at right guard with the ones, signaling he will be the starting right guard. SMU offensive line coach Garin Justice said on Tuesday he’d be the backup center. Justin Osborne will start at center, no analysis is needed.
Although Logan Parr looks to be weeks ahead of schedule recovering from his offseason surgery, Savion Byrd is taking reps with the ones and he will likely start at left guard. Lastly, there is no doubt PJ Williams will start at left tackle, considering his impressive fall camp.
Another offensive line note is that Graham Uter continues to take snaps at center. Uter continues to improve his blocking ability, however, he lacks some consistency in the quality of his snaps.
Other SMU practice notes
*** Wide receiver Jordan Hudson was vocal during practice today. Hudson was making sure teammates were watching the ball all the way into the tuck and giving younger receivers advice on how to burst out of their stances, meanwhile making all the catches in indy drills.
*** SMU’s running backs took time today catching passes. Brashard Smith and Derrick McFall looked most comfortable, which should come as no surprise with their experience at receiver. Jaylan Knighton bobbled a pass or two, but made the catches.
*** Brandon Crossley is someone that defensive coordinator Scott Symons picked out as having a good fall camp, and he finished strong today. The cornerback room has some underrated depth, from what the staff seems to be sharing.
