SMU building recruiting momentum with ACC move
SMU Football is riding high off an invitation and acceptance into the ACC, boosting their recruiting. Who are some of the names to know as the Mustangs look to stack talent?
*** 2025 DeSoto (Tex.) wide receiver Daylon Singleton told me SMU moved up in a big way after the news that the program is headed to the ACC. Tennessee, Miami, TCU and numerous others are making a push. The Mustangs would love to reel in the 6-0, 175-pound prospect and are making a move in his recruitment. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Singleton is the No. 249 overall prospect and No. 37 wide receiver in the nation. SMU leads the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.
*** A pair of Duncanville (Tex.) prospects SMU is turning up the heat on is four-star quarterback Keelon Russell and four-star safety Tyren Polley. Russell is down to Ole Miss and SMU, which is a close battle. With the move to the ACC, it could very well be the Mustangs that win out, but we’re going to be monitoring this one closely. Polley is another prospect who SMU is all over with Arkansas, LSU and others pressing. Once again, the ACC move could really bolster SMU’s position with both, although they’re at very different points in their recruitments.
*** North Crowley (Tex.) defensive tackle Sterlin Brooks committed to the Horned Frogs in July over SMU and others. The 6-3, 330-pounder is a force in the middle of the defense and plans to visit the Hilltop soon, he told On3. He was in Ft. Worth for TCU’s game against Colorado, but quietly, SMU’s been lurking before the move to the ACC. It’ll be a battle that rages on behind the scenes with the Mustangs hoping to get him on campus again. That’s something Brooks told On3 that he wants to do is take in an SMU home game. Brooks is a big defensive tackle that Calvin Thibodeaux covets for the future. According to On3, he’s the No. 97 overall defensive lineman in the country.
*** SMU did host Tyler (Tex.) Chapel Hill running back Rickey Stewart and athlete Demetrius Brisbon for visits last weekend. As other Power Five programs continue to recruit both, getting them on campus together again was big.
*** 2025 Red Oak (Tex.) defensive lineman Kamauryn Morgan is a teammate of 2024 SMU commit Zach Smith. The news of an ACC move was big for him, but something he was expecting. Thibodeaux hosted him this summer for a visit in June before getting him back on campus in July. The local program is in strong position early on.
“The news didn’t surprise me,” Morgan said. “I knew SMU had something up their sleeve, but it definitely opened my eyes more! Nothing like playing high-level football in your backyard!”
