Slam Dunk Championship ‘great experience to have’ for incoming Pudue freshman Myles Colvin
HOUSTON – The pair of perfect scores added another layer of confidence to Myles Colvin.
The incoming Purdue freshman received 10s from a panel of judges to kick off Friday night’s Rocket Mortgage High School Slam Dunk Championships at the Hoops House inside the Bayou Music Center.
In the end, Colvin came up short of winning the title, which was captured by Michigan State signee Coen Carr, who was a teammate of Colvin’s in USA Basketball’s 3×3 competition.
“It felt really good just for my confidence and get the jitters away and all that,” Colvin said. “I wish I could’ve come away with the win.”
Colvin and Carr each had perfect scores to start the finals, forcing a second dunk to determine the winner. Carr posted another perfect score, but Colvin totaled 28 points on his second attempt. The point totals were reset after the first two rounds. Colvin had perfect scores on three of his four dunks.
Instead of receiving the championship belt, Colvin spent the moments after the finals taking pictures with young fans, who were enamored with his athletic ability and the ease with which he executed his high-flying dunks.
“It was a great experience being on a national stage, being on television. That’s always a blessing and a great experience to have,” Colvin said. “It’s a matter of preparing well.”
The event will air on CBS on Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET).
He spent the last two months working up to Friday’s big moment. Colvin doesn’t consider himself a “flashy dunker” but wanted to add some style on the national stage.
“I tried to pick dunks that fit by jumping ability,” he said. “I know I can jump high and finish strong. I didn’t want to do anything too crazy, but I also wanted to get a little flashy with it.”
The 6-foot-6 Colvin closed out his career at Heritage Christian, averaging 19.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and connected on 45 3-pointers as a senior. Colvin is slated to play in the Iverson Classic later this spring and is expected to earn a spot on the Indiana All-Star team, which holds its annual series against Kentucky in June.
“It’s a fun event because of what basketball means to Indiana,” he said. “Being one of the top players in the state, that’s the one thing you look forward the whole year to playing in.”
And then, it’s off to Purdue.
Colvin will bring an improved overall basketball IQ and an enhanced defensive approach to the Boilermakers.
“I think I was consistent throughout my four years, and I think it’s a matter of getting to another level and just competing and working hard and doing what coach Painter wants me to do to get on the floor,” Colvin said.
