Simmons Scoop: Georgia buzz, LSU and NC State flip targets and the Vols will add more

We are closing in on the start of the college football season and top recruits in the 2025 class are still announcing their commitments, flipping to other schools and lining up their decision dates for later this fall.

Tennessee owned this weekend. It started with Five-Star Plus+ offensive tackle David Sanders, Jr. committing to the Vols on Saturday. He had been trending to the Vols for some time, but made it official at his ceremony. On Sunday, Tennessee flipped four-star linebacker Jaedon Harmon from Alabama.

I don’t expect the Vols to be done this month. Onis Konabanny is set to commit on Aug. 23 between Florida State and Tennessee. The Vols are the favorite to land the long, rangy cornerback out of Columbia (S.C.) Heathwood Hall.

We saw Harmon flip on Sunday, so who is next? Keep an eye on athlete Gerritt Kemp of Hebron Christian Academy in Dacula (Ga.). He committed to Duke earlier this summer, but I logged a pick for NC State earlier this weekend. There is buzz that a flip could happen early this week.

Maybe it wasn’t a flip, but it was close. On Saturday, four-star EDGE Chase Linton backed off his commitment from Rutgers. Georgia offered Linton a few weeks ago after two visits to Athens this summer. He is expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 31 for the Clemson-Georgia game, then back for an official visit when the Bulldogs host Tennessee Tech. He is trending heavily toward the Bulldogs. Steve Wiltfong and I have logged picks for Georgia.

There is another one to watch. Braxton Kyle and Linton are good friends. Kyle is committed to Rutgers, but he recently added offers from Georgia and Texas. Both schools could receive visits this fall. Georgia is his dream school.

LSU added a commitment from tight end Mike Tyler on Saturday and the Tigers want to add more this month. At different times Arkansas and Texas have led for Aidan Anding. LSU entered the race earlier this summer and became a factor. A decision is expected to come soon and LSU and Texas are battling. Kade Phillips is a Texas commit to watch too. The Tigers may have some momentum here and it has picked up in recent days.

Walter Mathis is a defensive lineman I still feel good about when talking LSU targets. A decision could come from Mathis in the coming weeks. Jaime Ffrench is still on the watch list too. He decides on Aug. 30, but Texas has the momentum late. We are still told communication with LSU and Miami is taking place.
