Shane Beamer updates the status of two suspended South Carolina players

Shane Beamer updates the status of two suspended South Carolina players

There is still no new or pertinent information regarding the status of two suspended Gamecocks football players, according to head coach Shane Beamer.

Beamer–speaking to the media before Wednesday’s Welcome Home event–said a decision on potentially reinstating Monteque Rhames and Cam Upshaw hasn’t been made and is a university issue.

“There’s a lot that has to happen for us to get to that point. Like I told y’all before, and I’m not trying to dodge the question, but it’s above my head from a university standpoint. The university would have to decide that they were willing to allow them to come back to school. We’ll see what happens,” Beamer said.

“They have a suspension that’s a certain length. When that time is up we’ll see where they are. They may decide they want to go somewhere else or they may decide they want to still be Gamecocks. That’s kind of where we are on that. I don’t know. It’ll be an answer above my head when it gets to that point.”

Both Rhames and Upshaw were suspended in January stemming from an off-the-field incident. Online records show Rhames was booked for two different charges: one was carrying weapons on school property while the other was obstruction of justice.

As of Wednesday, Upshaw has not been charged with anything according to the Richland County Public Index.

Anthony Rose was also charged and suspended at the time but he’s since entered the transfer portal.

None of the three went through spring practice with the Gamecocks and have not been part of the program since the initial suspension.

Beamer didn’t rule out those two potentially returning to the team once those suspensions are up, but said certain things would have to be met in order to return to the team.

“I think everybody makes mistakes and they made a pretty serious one. We want to see if they’ve learned from it. If they lived their life the right way since that time,” Beamer said. “Have they stayed out of trouble and done the things they’re supposed to do as a person first and foremost? Then we’d have a decision to make at that point.”

Rhames–who grew up in South Carolina–was a four-star prospect and the No. 373 player in the On3 industry rankings when he signed with the Gamecocks.

Upshaw, a Florida native, was the No. 995 player in the industry rankings and a three-star prospect.
