Shane Beamer explains what makes Juice Wells special
Shane Beamer is elated to have Juice Wells back at South Carolina in 2023, and he believes the sky is the limit.
Antwane “Juice” Wells is a former four-star recruit from the 2019 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, who joined South Carolina last season via the NCAA Transfer Portal from James Madison. He made an immediate impact on Beamer and the Gamecocks, and he’s hoping to take his game to the next level in 2023.
As spring practices roar on, Beamer elaborated on what Wells can do to improve in 2023 to the media, and explained how special of a player the South Carolina wide receiver is.
“I think it’s his hunger, and competitive spirit to be the very best player that he can be,” started Beamer. “He’s just got a strong work ethic, and a desire to be great. He really does. He’s got an edge about himself. That allowed him to, for a lot of reasons, but that was one of the main reasons that allowed him to have the year that he had last season. For us, it’s just continue to build on that, and look at what can he be better at.
“Whether it be perimeter blocking, whether it can be run after the catch. Ball security, as well. I saw a thing on social media the other night, with a picture on how he’s one of the leaders in the SEC in yards after contact, or something like that. That was great, but his ball security on the play was god awful, because it was like this. So obviously we’ve got to coach that better. But every little thing. I mean, he’ll be the first to tell you he can improve on all of it, because of his mentality and his work ethic and his desire to be great. That will continue to push him to where he needed to be. And to be a great teammate. Not that he wasn’t last year, but he’s a guy that should be in a leadership role for us, and that whole wide receiver group.”
Moreover, Wells led the Gamecocks in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches last season after transferring in like his quarterback Spencer Rattler. He amassed 68 receptions for 928 yards and 6 touchdown grabs in his first season in the SEC.
It’s easy to see why Shane Beamer and company believe Juice Wells can be special. Time will tell how far he can climb, but nobody should bet against him.
