Senior Primer: Ohio State wide receiver commit De’zie Jones

Senior Primer: Ohio State wide receiver commit De’zie Jones

The high school football season is right around the corner and to build up the anticipation, Lettermen Row is going to roll out a primer for every Ohio State commit. There are 24 pledges to the Buckeyes’ 2025 class and we will discuss things we want to see from the commits, and one big game for the pledge. This is story No. 5.

COLUMBUS — De’zie Jones was not the first wide receiver who committed to Ohio State in the 2025 cycle. No, that distinction goes to Jayvan Boggs, who ended up committing to Missouri and then flipped to UCF.

But Jones, the No. 242 overall prospect and the No. 32 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings, committed to Ohio State and hasn’t wavered in his pledge. The four-star Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic star committed to the Buckeyes on March 30. He only took one official visit this summer, and you guessed it, it was to Ohio State.

He’s got a big senior season on deck and it kicks off on Aug. 30 at home against Sparta (N.J.) Pope John XXIII in a league game. Before he does, Lettermen Row lists out a few things we’re eager to see from Jones and highlights one big game for him this fall.

Things to Watch

Jones is the Buckeyes’ pure slot wide receiver in the class. He has lined up in the slot for the vast majority of his high school career because of his size — 5-foot-10, 175 pounds.

One thing we are looking forward to this fall is seeing how creatively Jones will be used by the DePaul staff. His versatility lends itself to him running the football. Can the DPC staff create opportunities for Jones to line up in the slot and take jet sweeps? What about an orbit motion into the backfield and take a toss? Any kind of run he would run would be outside of the tackles. Showcase his versatility in all ways.

We know Jones is the slot guy, but even with his height, seeing some plays lined up on the outside would be beneficial. It’s a different route tree than the slot position and the more routes you know the better.

One Big Game

Does Good Counsel play everybody who’s anybody this fall? It sure feels like it.

Jones and DePaul Catholic host the Maryland powerhouse program on Sept. 6. Two storied programs in the early action of the season? Sign us up. Jones will square off against Ohio State safety commit Faheem Delane in that game. That will be the first of many future battles between the two rising seniors.

Jones totaled 851 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 52 receptions last fall. He also had five carries for 66 yards. His versatility will be on full display all season long, but especially against Good Counsel.
