Second-year surge: Georgia DB Kyron Jones

Second-year surge: Georgia DB Kyron Jones

Georgia’s 2024 roster is set. The winter and spring transfer portal windows are closed and Kirby Smart now knows what players will be on his roster when preseason camp begins around August 1. The Bulldogs will be ranked by most, if not all, as the No. 1 team in the country going into the coming season.

If they’re going to live up to that hype, some guys are going to have to step up in their second seasons with the team. Below DawgsHQ continues a series discussing each player going into their second year with the program. Next up is a defensive back who is still climbing toward a really high ceiling.

DB Kyron Jones

Size: 6-feet 200 pounds

On3 Industry Ranking: No. 667 overall, No. 25 athlete, No. 20 in North Carolina

2023 Stats: Jones played in three of UGA’s 14 games as a true freshman. He had an interception in his first college game against Tennessee-Martin and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown but did not register a stat in his other two appearances.

Jones strengths and weaknesses

Jones has the ideal build for a safety/STAR at the college level. He’s a powerful, compact player who enjoys contact. The former running back also has great speed. Jones posted a 100-meter time of 10.54 while in high school.

Those close to the program have been impressed with how quickly Jones has picked things up on defense, but he still has a long way to go. As previously mentioned, he mostly played running back at the high school level and enrolled at Georgia with a lot to learn.

The Buzz…

We’re told that when it comes to raw athleticism, Jones is one of the most gifted guys on a loaded Georgia roster. He’s explosive and has been very intentional when it comes to taking on a relatively new role at defensive back. We’ve also heard good things about his football IQ and how quickly he has been able to learn the things that have been thrown at him.

In 2024…

It seems as if Georgia is pretty set at the STAR position with Joenel Aguero. He has spent more time at defensive back during his football career and had a really good spring. With that said, Jones is fighting to be the next man up. JaCorey Thomas got some reps at STAR this spring and is still in the mix to start at safety. He and Jones are neck and neck for that backup job. Jones is entering a pretty important offseason because if some of the Bulldogs’ complex defensive concepts truly begin to sink in, he can carve out a role for himself.
