Sean Miller set to become the next head coach of the Longhorns

During a career that includes eight trips to the Sweet 16, Xavier head coach Sean Miller is no stranger to making big moves on the first weekend of March Madness. Today’s move, from Xavier to Texas, might be his biggest.

Cedric Golden was the first to report:

Sean Miller will be hired as the new head basketball coach at the University of Texas, a high ranking official told the Austin American-Statesman Sunday.

Miller has been no stranger to Texas in recent years. Texas defeated Xavier in the Sweet 16 two years ago before Miller avenged that loss in the First Four this year. That was an interesting twist of fate as Miller was a front-runner to become Texas basketball coach before interim head coach Rodney Terry led Texas to the Elite Eight.

Though he has never coached in the Final Four, he has made four trips to the Elite Eight in his 20-year career and has a record of 21-12 in the storied tournament.

Texas marks his fourth stop after he began his career at Xavier then made a name for himself at Arizona before his time was undone by scandal. After his time in Tucson, he returned to Ohio to coach again at Xavier.

While at Zona, he made three of his Elite Eight trips and was Pac-12 Coach of the Year three times. He won five regular season titles and three Pac-12 tournament titles.

Despite his success, his time at Arizona came to an unceremonious end after failing to make the NCAA Tournament multiple years in a row and an FBI investigation regarding improper benefits being paid to recruits.

He returned to Cincinnati to coach the Musketeers, and in three years with XU he has made two NCAA Tournaments and one NIT.

Some of his NBA draft picks include Derrick Brown, Colby Jones, Derrick Williams, Grant Jerrett, Solomon Hill, Nick Johnson, Aaron Gordon, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Stanley Johnson, Kadeem Allen, Lauri Markkanen, DeAndre Ayton, Nico Mannion, Zeke Nnaji, and Josh Green.

Now, Miller ventures to Austin to lead a Longhorn basketball program that is looking to elevate itself from a first weekend team into one that ventures into the second weekend, and beyond, more than it ever has.
