Scout’s View: Charles Power evaluates the Florida QB targets

Scout’s View: Charles Power evaluates the Florida QB targets

The Florida Gators’ search for a 2025 quarterback signee seems to be largely focused on three players — Antwann Hill, Tramell Jones and Keelon Russell — at this time. Today, Charles Power, Director of Scouting and Rankings for On3, shares his thoughts on those three prospects ….

***

Antwann Hill, Warner Robins (Ga.) Houston County, 4-star: Florida is the On3 RPM favorite and he will officially visit the Gators on May 31. Duke and Memphis also will get OVs. Tigers are trending up.

SCOUT’S VIEW: “AJ Hill is one of the biggest-framed quarterbacks in the blue chip group. He’s also younger for the class. He’s a guy I think has a strong arm — he’s at his best delivering downfield. I think he’s probably a better athlete than the stats would show. He’s certainly at his best in a downfield passing offense when he uses his arm strength to stretch the field.”

FSU commit Tramell Jones recently visited the Florida Gators

Tramell Jones, Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin, 3-star: FSU COMMIT. Has visited the Gators twice this month, most recently April 17. Speaks often with Gators coach Billy Napier.

SCOUT’S VIEW: “Tramell Jones is a polished passer. A guy who really plays at a high level on Friday nights. Took Mandarin to a state title appearance. I think he’s at his best when he’s in pure pass situations right now. Strong in camp. Strong in 7-on-7. Whenever he can drop back he shows he’s accurate. Good decision-maker. I think the biggest thing for him is, there’s nothing about him that maybe is overly physically imposing but he’s accurate and steady. I’m kind of looking forward to just seeing him at the Elite 11 finals; we’ll get a closer look at him and how he stacks up physically. See where he stacks up in terms of the playmaking aspect.”

Russell is a 4-star SMU commit

Keelon Russell, Duncanville (Texas), 4-star: SMU COMMIT. Will officially visit Florida on June 7. Alabama and Texas and two others to watch. The Tide offered Russell on Wednesday. The Gators will visit him today.

SCOUT’S VIEW: “Keelon Russell is a quarterback that obviously plays at a very high level. He’s led Duncanville to two state championships in Texas’ highest classification. With him, it starts with the continued improvement he’s made. He’s younger for the class. He’s one of the youngest quarterbacks in the cycle and he’s gotten better and better every time we’ve seen him. I think the more games he’s played, the better he’s looked. In terms of the skillset you have to start off with his strong arm. Tangible velocity and is a light-footed functional athlete. In watching his junior film, he made some really impressive high-level throws into some small windows. And he has a well-rounded skillset. A guy who can operate from the pocket but also use his athleticism and is getting better and better. A guy who moved up for us in the last rankings. It’s understandable why he has teams coming after him despite being committed SMU.”

BEST ARM STRENGTH OF THE GROUP: Russell
MOST ACCURATE: Jones “but it’s close.”
BEST FRAME: Hill
BEST OVERALL QB RIGHT NOW: Russell
HIGHEST CEILING: Russell
