ESPN ranked top 75 QBs of 2000s — which Buckeyes made the list?

ESPN’s Bill Connelly released his ranking of the top 75 quarterbacks since 2000.

It seems as though Connelly weighted body of work heavier than single-season brilliance, hence why walk-on-turned-Heisman winner Baker Mayfield is No. 1, and Joe Burrow — despite his record-breaking and national title-winning 2019 campaign — is No. 5.

Here’s Connelly’s top 10:

Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma (2013-17)Cam Newton, Florida/Auburn (2007-10)Vince Young, Texas (2003-05)Tim Tebow, Florida (2006-09)Joe Burrow, Ohio State/LSU (2016-19)Deshaun Watson, Clemson (2014-16)Kyler Murray, Texas A&M/Oklahoma (2015-18)Lamar Jackson, Louisville (2015-17)Marcus Mariota, Oregon (2012-14)Robert Griffin III, Baylor (2008-11)

Counting Burrow, there are five former Ohio State quarterbacks listed among Connelly’s top 75 signal callers since 2000. Here are the four who finished their college careers with the Buckeyes:

No. 20 C.J. Stroud (2020-22): Stroud is the most recent Buckeyes quarterback and the first on this list. He was a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Ohio State, where he posted an 85:12 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Stroud became the highest drafted Buckeyes signal caller when the Houston Texans selected him No. 2 overall in this year’s NFL Draft.

No. 29 Justin Fields (2018-20): Fields transferred from Georgia ahead of the 2019 season and spent two years as a starter at Ohio State. He lost only two games in his Buckeyes career, and both of those defeats occurred in the College Football Playoff. Fields avenged one of them with a decisive win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl CFP semifinal during the 2020 season, a year in which Fields — who threw for 63 touchdowns and rushed for 15 more in an Ohio State uniform — led the Buckeyes to the title game.

No. 33 Troy Smith (2003-06): Smith is the last Ohio State player to win the Heisman. He guided the Buckeyes to the National Championship in 2006. But, like Fields, Smith fell short of a title with a blowout defeat in the championship game. Florida’s 41-14 win put a damper on Smith’s otherwise clutch season, where he tossed 30 scores and just six picks while completing 65.3% of his passes and quarterbacked the Buckeyes to ranked wins over No. 2 Texas, No. 2 Michigan, No. 13 Iowa and No. 24 Penn State.

No. 66 J.T. Barrett (2014-17): Barrett is the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in career passing yards (9,434), passing touchdowns (104), completions (769) and wins (38). His 104 career passing touchdowns are also a Big Ten record. Barrett is the best example of longevity at the position for the Buckeyes. He started games in each of his four years at Ohio State and was a key part of the Buckeyes’ national title season in 2014, even though he was sidelined down the stretch. Oh, and he went 4-0 against Michigan.

Ohio State adds former NFL head coach Joe Philbin as offensive analyst

Ohio State is bringing aboard former NFL head coach and Super Bowl-winning assistant Joe Philbin as an offensive analyst, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Philbin served as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2012-15. Current Buckeyes offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, notably, played for the Dolphins from 2009-14.

Philbin got his ring with the Green Bay. He was the offensive coordinator for the Packers from 2007-11, coaching Aaron Rodgers and Co. to a Super Bowl XLV victory.

His last job at the college level was at Iowa, where he was the Hawkeyes’ offensive line coach from 1999-2002.

Buckeyes hoops to play Alabama in first round of Emerald Coast Classic

Ohio State will play the top overall seed from last year’s NCAA Tournament in the first round of the Emerald Coast Classic, an early-season tournament that takes place in Niceville, Florida, on the campus of Northwest Florida State College over Thanksgiving Weekend.

The Buckeyes will face the Crimson Tide on Nov. 24 and then will square off against the winner of Oregon/Santa Clara on Nov. 25.

It’s the latest marquee non-conference matchup announced for Ohio State’s 2023-24 campaign, a slate that features a home game against Texas A&M five days into the season.
