Daniel Jeremiah scouts Marvin Harrison Jr., provides player comp
Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. is already projected to be the highest-drafted wide receiver since Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson Jr. went No. 2 overall in 2007.
As part of a “first look” 2024 NFL Draft prospect series, NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah provided an early scouting report of Harrison this week. Jeremiah also offered an NFL player comparison for Harrison, who, of course, is the son of another Hall of Fame wide receiver, Marvin Harrison Sr.
Here’s what Jeremiah liked about Harrison’s tape:
“Harrison has everything you look for in a No. 1 wide receiver. He has a big frame, outstanding speed and natural hands. He has a unique blend of power and grace. He can win right off the line in his release whether he’s using pure speed or simply swatting away cornerbacks with his hands. He changes tempo in his routes down the field and can access another gear when the ball is in the air.
“He tracks the ball easily over his shoulder on deep balls and is adept at adjusting to throws on his back shoulder. After the catch, he has the speed to pull away or he can use his lower body strength to break tackles. His competitive nature showed up through the entire season.”
Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com draft analyst
Here’s where Jeremiah thinks Harrison can improve:
“There isn’t much to critique after studying the tape. He did have some issues with low throws, but that’s always going to be a challenge for bigger wideouts. The only other area where he might not grade out at an elite level is elusiveness after the catch. He’s not going to make a lot of tacklers miss in space, but it doesn’t really matter. He can use his speed to run away from them or his strength to run through them.”
Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com draft analyst
Jeremiah pointed out that Harrison isn’t as quick as his father. That said, Harrison Jr. is bigger, Jeremiah noted. That’s why Jeremiah compared him to former Cincinnati Bengals star A.J. Green, who also flourished because of great size and hands. Jeremiah added that parts of the younger Harrison’s game, particularly his physicality and body control at the catch point, remind Jeremiah of former Houston Texans great Andre Johnson, too.
Ohio State taking open-minded approach to malleable nickel position
As Lettermen Row “Cornerbacks Week” continues, we took a look at a position that now fits into the cornerback profile more than it did last year: the “nickel.”
This offseason, the Buckeyes have taken a more open-minded approach to what was originally considered one of the three safety positions in defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ 4-2-5 system.
Now, Ohio State is putting more of a coverage emphasis on the role. But, really, it appears as if the nickel spot will be malleable. The job description and personnel there could be dictated by matchups.
