Savannah DT talks Gamecocks

The Gamecocks football staff has been plenty active in Savannah as of late on the recruiting trail.

Carolina has a commitment in the 2024 class from four-star tight end Michael Smith out of Calvary Day, whose team traveled to Columbia last month with most of its team in tow.

Calvary Day captured the seven-on-seven championship on June 23 while the linemen participated in the OL/DL portion of camp.

One of them, 2025 defensive tackle Walter Mathis, walked away with an offer.

“The camp was real competitive,” Mathis told GamecockCentral.com. “When I first got there, I was with the people in my age group. I went with the seniors and finished the rest of the camp with the seniors. I was doing drills with them, and we eventually did one-on-ones.”

The 6-foot-2, 270-pounder enjoyed working with Gamecocks defensive line coach Travian Robertson during the day.

Said Mathis: “The feedback was that I was doing good. I thought that their coaching staff was a very good staff, a coaching staff I could learn from.”

After the day’s activities wrapped up on the field, Mathis was able to see some facilities and learn more about Shane Beamer’s program.

“The campus was nice. We got to walk around the trophies and locker room and stuff,” he said. “It was pretty nice. I could really tell it was a place that seemed like home, that it was really well put together. It just felt like one big home.”

Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Louisville, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, among others, have also extended offers to Mathis.

Four programs currently stand out to him.

“Clemson, South Carolina, Auburn, and Duke,” he listed. “I’m looking to find a place that feels like home, a place I’ll feel comfortable at and be able to play at.”
