Saturday Snap Counts – Iowa Defense

As usual, the Iowa defense was stout against the run and the pass, allowing just one touchdown against Utah State and 14 total points. The defense was led by veteran linebacker Jay Higgins, who had 16 tackles in the game. Iowa was outstanding early on from a defensive perspective, not allowing a first down until the late stages of the first quarter.
Overall, the Aggies did put up 329 yards of total offense, but 127 of those yards were attained in the fourth quarter after Iowa had built a 24-6 lead.
Let’s take a look at the snap counts for the Iowa defense from Saturday based on the 74 snaps they faced.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Aaron Graves – 44
Jeremiah Pittman – 43
Joe Evans -40
Max Llewellyn – 33
Logan Lee – 31
Yahya Black – 31
Deontae Craig – 29
Ethan Hurkett – 28
Brian Allen – 21
TAKEAWAY – With the heat the way it was, we knew Iowa would rotate in a lot of players and they did. Nice to see a couple of younger players getting the most work in Graves and Pittman. Also, nice to see Brian Allen breaking into the rotation. He’s shown flashes and I think he’s becoming more consistent.
LINEBACKER
Jay Higgins – 70
Nick Jackson – 59
Kyler Fisher – 7
Jaden Harrell – 4
TAKEAWAY – Higgins was a workhorse on Saturday and I think he’s going to be all season. Good to see Fisher and Harrell get out there as well.
DEFENSIVE BACK
Cooper DeJean – 70
Sebastian Castro – 70
Quinn Schulte – 70
DeShaun Lee – 70
Xavier Nwankpa – 46
Koen Entringer – 28
TJ Hall – 12
Brenden Desfernandes – 4
Deavin Hilson – 4
Kael Kolarik – 4
TAKEAWAY – Had he not cramped up, Xavier Nwankpa would have probably been at 70 snaps too with Schulte, DeJean, and Lee. Nice debut for Lee. Entringer filled in solidly for Nwankpa at strong safety.
