Ryan Day could see Ohio State using two quarterbacks to start season

Ohio State is one of the many high-profile college football programs with a quarterback battle ongoing to begin fall camp. Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are competing for the starting role, looking to replace CJ Stroud. Nobody truly emerged out of spring practice, leaving head coach Ryan Day with a decision to make ahead of the season.

Or maybe not. Day said he would be willing to run with a two-quarterback system to begin the year. If Neither Brown nor McCord truly stand out and earn the job, Day is open to the idea of both getting competitive snaps.

“Somebody has to emerge to be the starter,” Day said. “And if you don’t know then you just keep pushing forward. I would like for somebody to step up and for that to happen. But you just don’t know… You think about the year the national championship was won here, it took all three guys.”

Both Brown and McCord technically have game experience. However, Brown does not have a passing attempt and ran the ball just once for one yard in two appearances. McCord has 58 career passing attempts for 606 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

So no matter who steps onto the field to start, they will be relatively inexperienced. Bringing someone in like that is nothing new for Day but does present its own challenges. Especially with an unusual schedule to open the year. There will be some tough challenges in the first third of the regular season for Brown or McCord.

Ohio State does begin the season against a Big Ten opponent on the road, Indiana. The following two weeks are against teams the Buckeyes should be able to beat in their sleep. But Sept. 23 against Notre Dame is likely when a full-time starter needs to be determined.

Either way, Day wants to make sure the Ohio State quarterbacks are supporting one another. The national championship example was a good one, proving anybody could be used at any moment. Maintaining a high level despite being on the sideline could be critical to the team’s success.

“The message to that room is that we need to be the best quarterback room in the country,” Day said. “Whoever is playing on the field, the other three guys need to support him and they need to keep pushing each other to be the best room. Right now, that’s the focus.”
