Rusty’s Ramblings: Georgia freshmen making noise in first scrimmage
Georgia finished up its first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday and the biggest note of the day, DawgsHQ was told of no injuries. That is always something we check about. “Bumps and bruises is about all” a trusted source told us. Big news. Let’s get to the quick notes on what we heard though…
*** Nate Frazier continues to impress. We were told, “He is the real deal so far.” He’s flashed before, and he did so again on Saturday. I asked somebody in attendance who the MVP of the day was, and I was told Frazier takes the cake. That’s very good news for a Georgia running back room that already features First-Team All-SEC selection Trevor Etienne and the promising Branson Robinson-Roderick Robinson duo.
*** I’m told another freshman has been maybe the biggest surprise of fall camp so far that. That would be Quintavius Johnson. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound outside linebacker continues to make plays. He apparently bullied some folks today and sent the defensive coaching staff into a frenzy with an impressive play against the offense. He was a quarterback in high school and is working on the EDGE in college. That’s a big transition, but he’s turning heads in his first fall at Georgia.
*** On the offense, Oscar Delp and Dominic Lovett made big time catches and stood out among the skill players today. Both are going to be counted on heavily and they look to be taking that responsibility of leading. Defensively, the veteran pair of Daylen Everette and Jalon Walker stood out. I’m told Everette did not give up a completion on his side while Walker had several tackles for loss including what would have been two sacks if allowed to tackle the Georgia quarterbacks.
*** Another note on a couple of youngsters, and it comes at a position of growing need for Georgia. Nasir Johnson and Nnamdi Ogboko are both “hard to block.” They’ve battled being out of shape some early this summer but are getting reps given the injury (and holding their own). I like this young defensive line group a lot, and if they continue to play this like – especially for another week before camp breaks – that’s huge news for Georgia’s depth up front.
