Rusty’s Ramblings: Georgia football preseason camp buzz and more

Georgia is over a week into preseason camp and is getting ready for its first scrimmage on Saturday. There’s also a five-star decision coming in three days. DawgsHQ has intel for you on both fronts.

*** We are a few days out on five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri’s decision and I would pick Missouri at this point. I know Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee have continued to recruit him and rightfully so. He is elite. But everything from my end leads me to the home state Tigers. I will continue to check on this over the next 48 hours.

*** I’ve kind of laughed through the years as people reported on camps and off-seasons. Everyone has optimism and that’s understandable. You see “seniors have bought in” and “best off-season we have ever had.” Based on my 13 years in the business, you’re going to see stuff like that every single offseason. But I will say this much about Georgia, I have had two different sources tell me this is Kirby Smart’s best team in terms of connection and attitude. I was told that not one player has been late for curfew except for one starter, one time. I’m told that after a search by the support staff, they found that player cleaning the locker room at 10pm by himself because he felt it did not meet the standard. I am told that not one player has overslept or has been late to a meeting so far in camp. That’s something that usually happens from time to time when you’re dealing with guys this age but it hasn’t yet. To my knowledge, that’s a first under Smart.

*** I was also told that a very high profile player walked up to a student manager on Monday and handed him a box of brand new Nike shoes and Jordans. He told the manager that he was part of the team and he wanted him to “have some kicks like us.” As far as I know the player and the manager barely knew each other. That was impressive to hear..

All of that may not mean a thing. It could also tell us about where this team is, how connected it can be on the field and where it is headed.
