Rusty’s Ramblings: Decision day for Daniel Calhoun

As has been the case quite a few times in the past two months, we will learn more about Georgia’s 2024 class by the end of the day. The Bulldogs are awaiting the decision of four-star offensive lineman Daniel Calhoun and DawgsHQ has some notes for you as we head into it.

Big day for Calhoun and it’s the end of a long process. I first met him as an 8th grader and I think he was 6-foot-4.5, 320 pounds at 14 years old. His father told me one time that as Daniel competed in sports as a youngster, they would have to keep his birth certificate handy because, as you would imagine, people thought he was older than he actually was.

One thing that needs to be mentioned with Calhoun is that he is a competitor. We hade him at multiple MVP camps and Georgia Elite showcases and each time he was there to compete.

I finally called his father after he signed up last year for one of my camps and told him, “Daniel has 50 offers, he won’t need any camp exposure for the rest of his life.” That tells you a lot about his make up, though. He loves to compete. Calhoun wasn’t resting on his early ranking, offers, and accolades. He works and he wants to improve as an offensive lineman.

A coach at Walton told me last wee that Daniel is a film junkie and really works hard in the weight room. He will need to lose weight on the next level and I feel confident that he will. I expect he will play in the 330-pound range after some time in a college strength and conditioning program.

IF he picks UGA today, and that has been my prediction for awhile now, the Bulldogs will be getting a good one. Per my understanding here at the end, it has come down to Texas and Georgia. Alabama was in it until the end as well.
