Rulo makes first visit to Iowa City
Class of 2026 defensive lineman Jonathan Rulo had a chance to make his first visit to Iowa City for the Hawkeye Tailgater on Saturday. For the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Belleville, IL native, it was a great chance to learn more about the University of Iowa as he begins the recruiting process with the Hawkeyes.
“When I got there, I met up with Coach Bell and we walked to registration,” Rulo told HawkeyeReport.com. “After we were inside, they did introductions and then showed us the locker room and the away locker room, and then we made our way to the indoor facility and the weight room.”
“After that, we had an informational meeting about what it’s like going to Iowa and how the academics work,” said Rulo. “Then we were split into position groups and had conversations with our coaches about recruiting.”
For Rulo, a defensive tackle with good sophomore film, that meant a lot of one-on-one time with Iowa defensive line coach Kelvin Bell, who impressed the Class of 2026 prospect.
“I talked with Coach Bell a lot and honestly he’s a great guy,” Rulo said. “From what he explained, good players come in a lot of shapes and sizes and to be recruitable, it’s not just about testing. It’s also about how much character you have and how much trust you build with your coach.”
Rulo, who had 35 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and six sacks as a sophomore last season, left Iowa City on Saturday with a better understanding of the Hawkeyes’ football program.
“I liked it,” said Rulo. “The coaches were cool and it seem like a place where I could better myself.”
Also a standout wrestler, Rulo has finished second and third at heavyweight the last two years for Belleville East at the Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament. Up next for him is training for nationals, which take place in Fargo, ND in July.
“As far as camps and visits, I might be done for the summer,” Rulo said. “I have training for wrestling nationals in North Dakota coming up.”
