RPM Prediction: Four-Star TE Damarion Witten
The Kentucky football coaching staff is in the thick of a busy recruiting season. After a dozen official visitors departed on Sunday, a round of mid-week visitors is en route to campus. More will follow on Friday.
In the midst of the madness, there’s only been one commitment so far, three-star linebacker Antwan Smith. Folks close to the Joe Craft Kentucky Football Training Center do not believe he will be alone. It’s only a matter of time before others follow. The next one could be a big one, four-star tight end Damarion Witten.
Kentucky and Ohio State Battle for Damarion Witten
It’s been exactly one week since Lettermen Row insider Matt Parker placed an Ohio State pick for Witten in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM). Since then Witten has spent a weekend in Lexington. It sounds like things went well.
Don’t believe me? Hear it from the horse’s mouth.
“This OV was so important to me just because I never got to experience anything like that before and it did change how I think about UK,” Witten told KSR’s Zack Geoghegan.
“I had (freshman WR Anthony Brown as my host) and we were talking about how UK is overall and he told me some things that opened my ears about the program and the staff.”
What may come as a surprise: Witten’s Kentucky revelation happened while officially visiting with another tight end prospect, Willie Rodriguez. The competition does not appear to be deterring either from considering Kentucky. That’s because Kentucky has shown multiple tight ends can succeed simultaneously in Liam Coen’s offense.
The Wildcats have momentum with Damarion Witten. However, even if Kentucky can secure a commitment and get Witten to cancel his official visit to Columbus scheduled for next week, Coen and Vince Marrow must play the long game.
Witten is coached by Ted Ginn Sr. at Glenville High School in Cleveland. It’s Ohio State’s bread and butter on the recruiting trail. If the Buckeyes take off the gloves and go all in, things could get complicated. But for right now, Kentucky is in the driver’s seat to secure the services of an explosive, playmaking flex tight end.
