Roger Goodell speaks out about Washington Commanders sale
The Washington Commanders are in the process of being sold from one party to another — and the ordeal is taking a little bit longer than the involved parties had expected. However, NBC Sports reported on Tuesday that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed confidence in the Commanders purchase becoming official in the near future.
According to the article NBC published, Goodell and folks at the NFL offices are trying their best to expedite the process to get the new ownership in place.
“Goodell had a press conference from the league meetings in Minnesota and said that work to vet the bid by Josh Harris‘ group to by the team ‘as quickly as we can’ in order to be able to present it to the other 31 teams for approval. Goodell added that he expects that ‘thorough job’ will result in approval of the sale.”
Though the NFL is hoping to move swiftly through these last few obstacles, Goodell seems confident the league’s vetting process will be up to snuff and the Harris group will be approved to buy the team.
“I think we’ll get it to a place where it’ll be approved,” Goodell said, per NBC, who also expects the Harris group to break ground on a new stadium sometime in the near future as part of their new acquisition of the franchise.
“Assuming the sale gets done, Goodell said he expects Harris and the Commanders to begin the process of putting together a deal to build a new stadium but any work on that front will have to wait until the league officially signs off on the long-awaited sale.”
Sounds like this deal is finally getting close to becomming official.
More details on Commanders sale
For an NFL team to be sold, three quarters of the team owners (24 teams) must approve of the sale. It seems likely that a sale agreement between the Snyders and the proposed new ownership group — led by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris — will be approved, but at a later date.
According to the NFL.com report, NFL executive vice president of communications Jeff Miller told reporters that an update on the sale will be provided to owners.
“There are not going to be any votes at this time,” Miller said.
In April, the Harris group apparently reached a deal to purchase the Commanders for $6.05 billion — a record price tag for the sale of a sports team.
On May 12, it was jointly announced by the Snyders and the Harris group that the two sides had entered into a purchase agreement.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport did report then that the owners could reconvene in the summer to vote on the sale if it wasn’t settled at the spring league meeting. The NFL owners convened in August of 2022 to approve the sale of the Denver Broncos.
The NFL.com report also noted that the Snyders and Commanders will remain under investigation by former U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White regarding “allegations of workplace misconduct and potential unlawful financial conduct.”
