Road notes: Intel on Notre Dame 2024 four-star WR target Ryan Wingo’s recruitment
The Midwest is almost always a fertile recruiting ground for the Notre Dame football program. And this recruiting cycle is no exception.
In the 2024 class, Notre Dame has offered 31 prospects across Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin. And so far, it has secured four pledges from the region, which accounts for half of the recruiting class.
Saline (Mich.) quarterback CJ Carr, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller cornerback Karson Hobbs, Hannibal (Mo.) running back Aneyas Williams and Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard West wide receiver Cam Williams have helped start the class. Now, the Irish are looking to the other 27 recruits to help complete it.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Blue & Gold hit the recruiting trail to see three of those recruits: offensive lineman Styles Prescod and wide receivers Jeremiah McClellan and Ryan Wingo. We will have complete reports from those targets in the coming weeks. But until then, here’s what Blue & Gold learned about each recruitment.
Next up in this edition of road notes is Wingo.
The On3 Industry — a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services — ranks Wingo as the No. 152 overall player, No. 21 wide receiver and No. 2 player in Missouri.
In On3’s rankings, McClellan is the No. 74 overall player, No. 11 wide receiver and No. 3 player in Missouri.
The latest on four-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Wingo insisted he’s still open-minded with his recruitment. A junior at St. Louis University High, Wingo, has visited 23 schools and eight of them more than once. Notre Dame has hosted him on five college recruiting visits, more than any other school.
Unlike McClellan, where I stated a Fall commitment could benefit the Irish, I feel the opposite about Wingo. By visiting Notre Dame on five different occasions, it seems like he’d have enough information to make a decision. And he said as much.
“I think I’ve been there through the coaching change,” Wingo told Blue & Gold. “I was there with Brian Kelly. I was there with (head) Coach (Marcus) Freeman, his first year — I’ve talked to him. I’ll visit again, but I think I can pretty much make a decision if I go to Notre Dame based on how many times I’ve been there.”
Still, another visit would be a welcome sign for the Irish if they can make it happen.
After this weekend’s trip to Nebraska, Wingo said he is shutting down his college recruiting visits for the remainder of the spring. That would likely mean he could embark on official visits the next time he begins visiting schools.
2024 class recruits can begin officially visiting schools on April 1.
For Notre Dame to be seen as a legitimate contender to land Wingo’s commitment, his next trip to South Bend must be an official one. Recruits are only allotted five official visits, and for the Irish to get one after already hosting him five times would be a statement. Georgia has seemed to get one of his official visits.
Wingo is looking for two things when choosing a school: the development of wide receivers into the NFL and a school’s education. As the No. 18 ranked best national university, Notre Dame certainly fits the latter. The Irish have also sent three wide receivers to the NFL since 2017.
If Wingo is still as open to all schools as he says he is, there is still time for Notre Dame to make up ground. Or it could call his potential bluff and move on to other top targets. But with a return to Notre Dame on Wingo’s mind, the Irish have a puncher’s chance. It’s now a matter of how long will the Irish think they can still swing?
