RJ Greer sets NC State official visit, updates commitment timeline

After missing most of his sophomore year following foot surgery, three-star Archbishop Alter (Ohio) guard RJ Greer turned around and helped the Knights to a state championship in March.

That postseason run helped drum up more interest on the recruiting trail, but NC State has been heavily involved throughout Greer’s recruiting process. Now, the Wolfpack has earned an official visit from the third-ranked player in The Buckeye State’s Class of 2025.

Greer, a 6-foot-4, 170-pound shooting guard, scheduled an official visit to NC State set for June 6-8, he told TheWolfpacker.com. He will also officially visit Cincinnati and Penn State, while a couple other undisclosed programs are working to secure a trip with the guard as well.

But NC State has been firmly in the mix throughout Greer’s recruitment, and the team’s trip to the Final Four was a way to get back in front of the guard. Greer went to Phoenix with his father, Ricardo, an assistant at Dayton. While he was there, Greer attended the Wolfpack’s open practice and he was able to chat with coach Kevin Keatts and his staff, continuing to build a relationship.

“I watched every single game from the ACC Tournament onwards,” Greer said of NC State’s run through March. “Watching the Virginia game was big time. I had Dayton to cheer on just because of my dad, but I also had NC State to cheer on throughout the whole entire tournament. We went to the Final Four, so I got to talk to the coaches a little bit. That was really nice.”

That relationship is what has drawn Greer towards the Wolfpack, and it has paid off with an official visit being scheduled. But when he hits the road to see the programs up close again, Greer’s biggest priority will be to see who is most interested in him as a rising senior.

The age of the transfer portal, and plugging holes with experienced collegiate players, has made high school recruiting different. Now, Greer wants to see which programs genuinely have interest in his services.

“With the portal, high school kids definitely get a lot less attention,” Greer said. “I’m just trying to still see who’s really interested. We’re kind of cutting the BS now.”

Greer expects to make his commitment in late July to early August after the AAU season wraps up, and the Wolfpack are in the thick of his recruitment. Greer named Cincinnati, NC State, Penn State and the NBL in his top four in January, though he noted a couple more schools have joined the mix but he did not want to unveil them quite yet.

As his recruitment is in full swing, Greer said he is still improving as a basketball player. He has always been a lights-out shooter, but now he has become more versatile offensive, while expanding his game on the defensive end.

“Just being less one-dimensional,” Greer said of his growth on the court. “Coming into high school, I was labeled as a really good shooter. I’ve been keeping my shot, obviously, but I’m trying to work on multiple things so I’m harder to guard.”

But as he prepares for his recruitment to ramp up over the summer, Greer was appreciative of the programs that have pursued him in the transfer portal era.

“It’s extremely reassuring knowing that the work I’ve put in is really paying off through the eyes of other coaches,” Greer said. “It’s one thing for your dad as a coach to tell you that you’re that good of a player, but when other coaches actually think you’re a valuable piece to the team when they could be getting 25-year-olds, it’s great.”
