Rhule isn’t quite ready to name QB starter after Nebraska’s second major scrimmage

Nebraska second-year coach Matt Rhule said Saturday that he plans to name a starting quarterback sometime in the coming week.
Rhule’s comments came in the immediate wake of his team’s second major scrimmage of preseason camp, a 137-play session.
“We’ll go out and watch tape now (and) kind of look at a lot of different positions, and sort of say, ‘Hey, here’s the depth we have going into the first game,’” he said, referring to Nebraska’s August 31 opener against UTEP in Lincoln.
Dylan Raiola, a strong-armed true freshman, is widely regarded as the favorite to land the starting quarterback job. But the team is confident in all the quarterbacks, Rhule said.
“And I think the thing we know internally is it’s the job of everyone else to make the quarterback successful,” the coach said.

Rhule has said previously that it’ll be evident when someone emerges as the top choice at QB. He was asked if it’s become evident.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Honestly, I don’t know. I think we feel confident in all the guys. It’s a really good question. I think the thing that we have is three guys that we feel like can lead us to wins. From that part, it’s hard.
“Should someone be more advanced right now than someone else? Yes. The difficult part in it is you have one guy who’s played, and you’ve seen him play — and you know how hard it is to play.”
Heinrich Haarberg, a junior from Kearney, was 5-3 as Nebraska’s starter last season.
Rhule added, “And you see two guys who haven’t played yet in college, and that’s maybe the unknown factor here.”
Raiola is joined in camp by fellow true freshman Daniel Kaelin, who starred for Bellevue West.
“All three guys have worked really hard and done a good job,” Rhule said. “I’m sure they will all continue to improve.”
Nebraska made it through the scrimmage with no major injuries, Rhule said.
