REUSE: Dell McGee heard the whispers about his recruiting

REUSE: Dell McGee heard the whispers about his recruiting

It was just over a year ago that the cries surrounding Georgia’s efforts at running back recruiting reached a fever pitch. Dell McGee drew ire for not closing on Dawg legacy Justice Haynes, watching the nation’s No. 2 running back land with the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Ultimately, the Bulldogs ended up flipping Roderick Robinson in October, but one back seemingly didn’t take away the sting of missing out on the Son of Hobnail Boot.

Fast forward about 380 days and many of those voices have been making far less noise.

Georgia now holds commitments from the No. 2 (Nate Frazier), No. 9 (Dwight Phillips), and No. 11 (Chauncey Bowens) backs in the Class of 2024 per the On3 Industry Ranking. When you take the rest of the industry out of it and look to the On300, Frazier checks in at No. 1, Bowens at No. 5, and Phillips at No. 9.

Each brings a different spin to the Dawgs’ room, as well.

Phillips is one of the nation’s fastest prospects regardless of position with James Cook-esque versatility to his game. Bowens is quick and powerful, calling to mind Zamir White during his collegiate career. Frazier, meanwhile, is a bit of a combo of both, with the ability to catch his top speed and burst through holes in a way that reminds On3’s evaluators of D’Andre Swift.

Make no mistake — Dell McGee needed a strong cycle. Restocking Georgia’s backfield was a major necessity after a single back last year, and with three backs in, what looks to be a pretty clear indication of what the most experienced upperclassmen already in Athens may choose to do after the season.

Georgia’s running backs coach has come through in spades ahead of the season, giving the Dawgs a trio to stack up with any combo that the rest of college football may try to put together in this cycle.

Add McGee to the list of Stacy Searels and Tray Scott in terms of Dawgs staff members who had folks scratching their heads in terms of direction earlier in 2023. He’s reset any notions about his recruiting in this cycle, and his efforts should shape the Georgia backfield for years to come, as it’s very possible we look back on this as a special class for the Dawgs in the backfield.
