Report: Jaguars to hire Packers assistant Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator

The Jacksonville Jaguars are hiring Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator, NFL Network reported. He spent one season with the Packers.
Campanile is the first notable hire for Liam Coen as he takes over in Jacksonville. He worked his way up from the high school ranks in 2007 through the college level and got his first NFL job with the Dolphins in 2020. He spent four years with the Miami Dolphins as linebackers coach before working under Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley this past season.
Campanile previously worked as the linebackers coach at Michigan in 2019 and co-defensive coordinator at Boston College in 2018 after two years as the Eagles’ defensive backs coach from 2016-17. Before that, he was an assistant at Rutgers from 2012-15.
Campanile’s name came up in a couple college defensive coordinator searches this offseason, as well, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. Now, he’s heading to Jacksonville as the first big hire for Coen, who was announced as Jaguars head coach earlier this week after one season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator.
Coen helped lead Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers defense to an impressive season and a playoff berth. Tampa Bay ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring and third in total yards en route to a 10-7 record. Coen’s name then became a hot one around coaching circles, but his situation got complicated as the carousel spun.
The Jaguars interviewed Coen to replace Doug Pederson, but he reportedly was preparing to sign an extension to stay in Tampa and become one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league. After that news came out, though, Jacksonville fired general manager Trent Baalke. Just a few days later, the franchise announced Coen as its next head coach.
As for the circumstances around his departure, Coen told the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud it was a “business” move. He also pointed out what it means for his family.
“At the end of the day, it came down to business,” Coen said. “It did. It came down to family and business and a dream that was right in front of you. Not maybe down the road. How do you say no to that?”
“It started to become more clear with every hour that this was an opportunity that you just can’t pass up, for so many different reasons,” he added. “And you ultimately wanna do truly what’s best for you and your family. And that’s what this came down to.”
