Report: Arizona State expected to self-impose bowl ban for 2023 season

Arizona State is expected to self-impose a bowl ban for the 2023 season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The self punishment stems from the Herm Edwards era of Sun Devil football.

“Sources: Arizona State is expected to self-impose a one-year bowl ban for the 2023 football season,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “The decision stems from the ongoing NCAA investigation for alleged violations that occurred under former coach Herm Edwards.”

The investigation dates back to 2021.

“The investigation stems in part from a dossier of documents sent to the NCAA on May 31 of 2021 detailing repeated and gratuitous recruiting violations, including multiple instances of ignoring restrictions implemented during COVID-19 recruiting dead period,” Thamel wrote in a Twitter/X thread.

There were alleged violations committed by Edwards, who was fired last September, just three games into his fifth season with the school.

Former Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham took over the Sun Devils program ahead of the 2023 campaign and heads into his first season at the helm.
