Recruiting Notebook: 2025 CB Devin Sanchez
Inside Texas takes a closer look at the fit and evaluation for 2025 Galena Park (Texas) North Shore cornerback and On3 Industry Ranking five-star Devin Sanchez in this edition of the Recruiting Notebook.
How he fits at Texas:
Devin Sanchez is the newest dominant cornerback from the North Shore defensive back factory. Sanchez on sophomore film at times appeared a little more comfortable playing as more of a cover 3, shuffling cornerback in zone and at 6-foot-2 he definitely looks like one. However North Shore is primarily about press-man coverage on an island and Sanchez is clearly learning to use his sub-11.00 100m speed and length there as well. He figures to become an island cornerback with time and at Texas might fit best as the field corner simply erasing the far end of the field on his own. If his frame fills out and he becomes more of an all-around defensive back who can bring above average physicality and tackling in addition to his burgeoning coverage skill he might fit at boundary cornerback. – Ian Boyd
Coach Says:
Strengths — Great height for the cornerback position. A very fluid athlete with excellent acceleration and elite straight line speed. Limited highlights show him playing off zone coverage with deep third responsibility. Plays the release from a side shuffle, showing light feet. Excellent change of direction with fluid hips. T-step/break is confident. Does not usually declare his hips too early, but is athletic enough to recover easily when he does. For a young player, he looks uncharacteristically calm when beat on a route. Excellent recovery speed. Plays through the ball, attempting to disrupt the catch zone. Shows good hands on interceptions. Is a willing tackler in run support. Shows reasonably good tackling form, getting his head out of the way. He will be a special teams contributor early on.
Areas for improvement — Would like to see more a little bit more from his press man coverage skills on film. If he can bring that, along with the anticipated increase in muscle, he could make things very interesting at the line of scrimmage. Eye discipline is always a challenge for young players.
How this affects Texas:
Even if the Horns take a handful of corners in the 2024 class, Sanchez is going to be the priority defensive back target in the 2025 cycle. Sanchez has elite traits to go with an athletic frame and DB disposition. Every major school is involved, with Texas, Ohio State, and Alabama looking solid early. Sanchez is looking at an unofficial trip to Texas in either late July or on a gameday this fall. – Justin Wells
