Record-setting WR Jayvan Boggs aims to make instant impact at FSU

When you put up the kinds of numbers he did in high school, it stands to reason that self-confidence won’t be an issue for Florida State freshman wide receiver Jayvan Boggs.

Boggs has only been a college student for about a month. He has never participated in a Florida State practice. And he’s playing a position that not only has two portal additions who are likely to start, but a number of other returning players who are trying to get on the field as well.

Still. The record-setting high school standout doesn’t see any reason why he can’t make an impact as a true freshman with the Seminoles. In fact, it sure seems like he expects it.

“I think I can contribute a lot this year,” Boggs said Tuesday during his first interview with the Florida State media. “Just me, the skill set I have. The God-given ability that God has blessed me with. And just me working hard, learning all the plays, getting the playbook down. Because I’m a very versatile receiver — I can move inside and out. But I think I’ll contribute a very good amount this year.”

There’s a good reason for that self-belief.

Boggs enjoyed a historic career at Cocoa High School, helping lead the Tigers to three straight state championships.

As a sophomore, he had 41 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns. As a junior, he racked up 93 grabs for 1,493 yards and 24 touchdowns. And as a senior, he caught 99 passes for 2,123 yards and 24 more scores.

In a 2024 state semifinal win, Boggs set a Florida high schools playoff record with 378 receiving yards. He came up just 28 yards shy of breaking the state record for yards in a single season.

Even still, the numbers are staggering. In three years of varsity football, Boggs totaled 233 catches for 4,338 yards and 54 touchdowns. And three state titles.

That production is even more impressive considering Boggs just started learning the wide receiver position in high school. Before that, he mostly played running back.

“My freshman year at Cocoa, that was when I transitioned to receiver,” Boggs said. “Really, Coach [Ryan] Schneider at Cocoa, he helped me a lot just with my game. And just me investing in myself to know stuff like that, the leverages and different stuff like that. But that really just comes with the game.

“It’s really kind of natural to me, I would say.”

The Florida State freshman is absolutely a natural pass-catcher. You don’t go over 4,000 yards and 50 touchdown receptions in high school without having an innate ability to get open and make plays.

Yet even with all those numbers, even with all those TDs, it wasn’t as if the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Boggs was considered an elite five-star prospect in high school.

He wasn’t a 0-star recruit, either. But none of the scouting services had him as one of the Top 15 receivers in the nation — despite all that production over the last three years.

“For sure, I take that personal,” Boggs said. “I mean, it ain’t nothing against them, but it’s really just a chip on my shoulder kind of. It motivates me to do better, to work harder and keep working.”

Working so he can hopefully get on the field quickly. And to play for the offensive coordinator he has been committed to for quite a while now.

Boggs was originally committed to play for Gus Malzahn at Central Florida. But when Malzahn moved to Tallahassee to run the offense for Florida State, Boggs followed right behind. And he is expecting that decision to pay off for both in the coming years.

“The trust in me that he had and the offense that he has is very fast, very explosive,” Boggs said. “He’s had a bunch of great guys he’s put in the NFL for the skill positions, and I had a lot of trust in him and his offense. And me and his relationship goes way back. So I just had a lot of trust in him.”
