Ready to report: Kamari Moulton
With high school graduation complete at Cardinal Gibbons, Florida running back Kamari Moulton is ready to report to Iowa City to begin his college career with the Hawkeyes. We caught up with the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Moulton this week to talk about the upcoming move, what he has been working on this spring, his goals for his freshman year, recruiting others from South Florida to join him at Iowa, and much more.
Q: What have you been up to this spring?
MOULTON: I’ve just been working out every day getting ready for Iowa. I’ve been working with my boy, JoJo (Johnel Mauvais). He’s a DB that played for us who’s going to Allen University in South Carolina. We’ve been in the gym and running hills or at the beach getting work in pretty much every day.
Q: What are you hoping to improve on as you get ready to head to Iowa?
MOULTON: What I’m working on is being more all-purpose, trying to get better in the pass game, and getting more twitchy.
Q: Did you play other sports in high school?
MOULTON: I used to run track, but I didn’t do it this year. I’ve still been doing speed workouts, but doing track before I’d always lose a lot of weight during the season.
Q: Where are you coming in at right now height and weight wise?
MOULTON: I’m about 5-10.5 and 190 lbs.
Q: Are you done with high school at this point?
MOULTON: Yes sir. I graduated last week.
Q: What was that experience like for you?
MOULTON: It was really breathtaking, just the whole experience. You always look up to other people that graduate and think that’s going to be me soon, but now that it’s actually happened it’s kind of a surreal moment, especially seeing me and all my friends go on different paths to try to be something in this world.
Q: That takes you to Iowa of course. When do you make the move up there?
MOULTON: I think I’m leaving June 8th.
Q: What are the feelings like as you get ready to make the move?
MOULTON: I’m excited to see my new family, my new home, and get to compete at a new level. I’m a little nervous leaving home, but I think in life we’ve always got to move on and elevate and now it’s my time.
Q: Have you found out who you are rooming with?
MOULTON: Yeah, this summer I’m rooming with Jarriett Buie, the receiver from Tampa.
Q: Do you stay in touch with him?
MOULTON: Yeah, I hit him up the other day and told him I can’t wait. I look forward to building a brotherhood and ready to work.
Q: Coaching wise, who you stay in touch with the most?
MOULTON: I talk to Coach Hodge and Coach Betts.
Q: What’s their message been to you since you signed in December?
MOULTON: With Coach Betts, he’s been telling me to enjoy my last high school experience because you only get it once and then once I get there it’s time to get to work. We went over the system and some of the plays and things too.
Q: What is your mindset coming in your freshman year?
MOULTON: My mindset coming in is just to be recognized for doing something whether that’s being able to block, catch, or anything. I just want to be recognized as a team player that can contribute to the team.
Q: Have you found out what number you’re wearing yet?
MOULTON: No, I have not.
Q: What are you hoping for?
MOULTON: I really don’t care. I believe it’s the person who makes the number, so whatever number I get I feel like I’m going to succeed in it.
Q: Was Coach Hodge back down to your high school recruiting this past month?
MOULTON: Yeah, they actually came to see my boy, Casey Etienne. He’s a safety they’re recruiting.
Q: Is he coming to visit this summer when you’re up there?
MOULTON: Yeah, that’s the plan. I’ve been talking to him ever since I committed really to let him know that it’s one of the top programs and he should come through.
Q: Going back to your decision, what do you think made Iowa the right choice for you?
MOULTON: I picked Iowa because when I went up there it was such a feeling of home. It’s a place that loves football and will give me a great opportunity and put me on a stage where I can broadcast my abilities and show people what I’ve got.
A three-star prospect with an On3 Industry Ranking of 84.03, Moulton verbally committed to Iowa on November 4, 2022, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic, Syracuse, Connecticut, Florida International, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Toledo, and Akron, among others. As a senior, he finished the season with 131 carries for 748 yards and eight touchdowns for Cardinal Gibbons.
