Rapid Recap: An updated Kansas State injury report

Kansas State health updates

There were a few notable absences for Kansas State in the 45-0 win over SEMO. While we knew Christian Duffie would not be available, wide receiver Keagan Johnson and safety Marques Sigle surprisingly did not play.

Johnson has a minor injury that occurred during practice. He is considered day-to-day, but the injury is not considered long-term or severe. KSO has also been told that the move to not have him in uniform was precautionary in nature.

Jadon Jackson stepped in for him and even caught a touchdown on the first drive.

Sigle was suspended for the season opener. However, K-State head coach Chris Klieman reiterated and emphasized that Sigle is the starting free safety for the Wildcats moving forward and will be in next week against Troy.

It was Colby McCalister that played in his absence.

Rotations

Kansas State was not afraid to rotate at a lot of spots. Sometimes they do it out of necessity. Sometimes they do it because of health reasons. Sometimes they do it because they know that they need to build additional depth.

Seven different offensive linemen played in the first half, and when Duffie returns from injury, that number could grow to as many as nine.

77 total players played in the contest against the Redhawks. There is nothing like game reps and game experience. There were 52,000 fans in the stands and the lights are the brightest during the game. The Wildcats wanted to get as many players in the game as they could tonight.

They can now spend the next few days looking over reps and evaluating all 77 that saw the field.

K-State secondary

The K-State secondary played pretty well for the most part on Saturday evening.

Jacob Parrish made some flash plays, Will Lee was solid and Keenan Garber contributed with few mistakes. Klieman was pleased with all three. Ryan Flournoy was a Preseason FCS All-American and Paxton DeLaurent has a lot of experience, but they contained and negated both.

QB2

Avery Johnson took all of the Kansas State snaps at quarterback when Will Howard exited the game. It was a mutual decision between Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein to get Johnson in the game and give him extended action.

The two sides went over multiple scenarios for the game and one included the script for tonight where the Wildcats were up and could give Johnson multiple drives. The true freshman quarterback played with a lot of poise and was in command of the offense.

Not only was his speed on display, but Johnson put the ball in some tight windows to both Tre Spivey and Jayce Brown.
