RADAR ’25: Michigan State keeping tabs on three-star quarterback

Michigan State and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson has offered eight quarterbacks so far in the class of 2025. The Spartans continue to expand the QB board, as in-state five-star Bryce Underwood, and Ohio four-star Ryan Montgomery of Findlay (OH) trend elsewhere. Class of 2025 three-star QB Luke Nickel, of Milton (GA), brother of current Spartan tight end Jack Nickel, committed to Miami over the Spartans and others earlier this summer.

Michigan State offered 18 signal callers in the class of 2024 before landing a commitment from three-star Henry Hasselbeck of Boston (MA) Xaverian Brothers Academy. The Spartans will look to sign Hasselbeck this winter, following up back to back four-star QBs in Katin Houser of the 2022 class and Sam Leavitt of the 2023 class.

A new name is emerging on the board, as Johnson and Michigan State offensive assistant Jake Reiling have begun recruiting Caleb Matthews of Clovis (CA) Garza High School.

Matthews currently does not rank in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings. He holds one offer so far, from San Jose State. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder also visited Oregon in June.

“I have been in touch with Coach Johnson and Coach Reiling,” Matthews told SpartanMag.com. “I would say since January. Coach Johnson had reached out to one of my quarterback coaches. Then it picked up in August when we were allowed to talk.”

Johnson and Reiling will be closely evaluating Matthew’s junior film as they look to schedule an unofficial visit to Michigan State in the meantime.

“We have had conversations about their practices, and he had asked about my summer and things like that,” Matthews said.

The rising junior will look to schedule an unofficial visit to Michigan State either this fall or after his high school season. The Spartans do not have any 2025 QBs on the fall visitor list just yet.
