Quinn Mathews reveals outpouring of support following complete game in Stanford Super Regional

Quinn Mathews is the most popular man in Stanford, California right now.

After his 156-pitch, complete game performance in the Cardinal’s 8-3 win over Texas on Sunday night, Mathews came back to his locker to find his phone ringing continuously with notifications from nearly everyone in his contact list.

“It was probably the most blown up my phone has ever been,” Mathews revealed. “I think I had 120 text messages — which for me is like 1,000 for a normal human being — so it was definitely a lot. Lots of friends and family and random people reached out. It was awesome seeing them cheer on me and the team. I appreciate the support.”

Mathews said he normally doesn’t respond to text messages in a timely manner. “m really bad at it,” he said. He tells people to call or FaceTime them if they really need to get ahold of him. If not, expect a text back in two to three business days with Mathews saying, “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry. I opened this and just didn’t respond.”

Still, he did his best to respond to as many messages as he could.

“I made sure to thank everyone for supporting me, supporting the team. It’s a journey, for us it’s an emotional rollercoaster for myself and for fans,” Mathews said. “So I was making sure to do my due diligence and respond to everyone the best I could.”

He finished the game giving up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk. He struck out a whopping 16 batters during the matchup — good for the first 15+ strikeout game by a pitcher in an NCAA Super Regional since 2019.

Mathews’ heroics came at the perfect moment for the Cardinal. Trailing the Longhorns 1-0 in the three-game Super Regional series, the rightie put his team on his back and threw nine innings of three-run baseball. 103 of his 156 pitches were strikes which improved Mathews’ record to 10-4.

The performance was nothing out of the ordinary, according to Mathews, as he’s used to throwing 100+ pitches in practice and in-game. The fact that he threw 156 pitches during a complete game in his final start at the Sunken Diamond still hasn’t completely sunk in with him yet.

If Stanford can hold out and defeat Texas on Monday night, the Cardinal have Mathews’ stellar performance to thank for a College World Series berth. If not, he’s the reason Stanford had a shot in the first place.
