DY: As our KSO subscriber pointed out, the run/pass split for Kansas State last season was closer to 60/40. That is a substantial amount of runs for a team that likes to operate at a quicker pace and began to rely on its quarterback a bit more in 2022.
However, it is important to acknowledge that a good portion of the season still had Adrian Martinez as the K-State quarterback. He was a significant contributor for the Wildcats, with his best performance coming against Oklahoma in Norman, but Martinez used his legs much more.
For whatever reason, the confidence in his own arm wasn’t always apparent, and he was much more willing to take off and do damage on the ground. Once he was injured, less of that existed in the Kansas State offense that was manned by Will Howard.
Unlike Martinez, Howard took some chances through the air and not necessarily with his feet. That was probably a good thing because he isn’t exactly the quickest player in the world. All of the adversity that he battled through made him tougher and allowed the game to slow down for him.
Under Howard, it was the best that the K-State passing game has looked since head coach Chris Klieman was hired by Gene Taylor and the Wildcats. Is some of that a product of play-caller Collin Klein? Of course. But No. 18 shined and was a considerable factor in Kansas State winning the Big 12.
With that being said, they do have two very, very good running backs in DJ Giddens and Treshaun Ward. That part of the game won’t be disappearing anytime soon. But for the reasons already stated, and as was alluded to on The Foundation, I imagine it being closer to a 50/50 split from K-State this season.
