QB Jackson Stratton discusses opportunity at Iowa
Quarterback Jackson Stratton is headed to the University of Iowa. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Colorado State transfer announced his decision today after receiving a interest from Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester this spring.
Stratton, who is originally from Southern California, will be joining the Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on this season.
“It came about when Coach Lester came to see me throw down in San Diego about a month ago and we just kept in touch until he told me he had a spot for me,” Stratton told HawkeyeReport.com. “I loved the school spirit that everyone I talked to told me about and the school has and how everyone really seems to care about this team.”
“Even though I’m a walk-on, he said he’d give me every chance to compete and I plan on taking advantage of the opportunity,” said Stratton, who has three years of eligibility remaining.
In two seasons at Colorado State, Stratton played in four games, completing 4 of 17 pass attempts for 78 yards and one touchdown. During his high school career at La Jolla, he completed 312 of 515 pass attempts for 4,469 yards and 52 touchdowns over four years.
“My game is about accuracy and being able to move in the pocket smoothly,” he said.
Stratton, who plans to arrive in Iowa City on June 10 to start summer workouts, will be part of a revamped quarterback room under Lester, who is in his first year as Iowa’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
From last year’s team, the Hawkeyes have had Deacon Hill, Joey Labas, and Tommy Poholsky transfer out and now have added Brendan Sullivan as well as Stratton from the portal. That is to go along with returning players Cade McNamara and Marco Lainez and then James Resar will be joining the team as a true freshman this summer.
