‘Putting on a show’ … 4-star DB Fred Gaskin and others shine during FSU 7-on-7 tourney

Mike Norvell likes to say that Florida State is where stars come to shine, and some very impressive high school stars were in Tallahassee on Wednesday for FSU’s seven-on-seven tournament.

One of the prospects who stole the show was four-star safety Fred Gaskin III. The talented prospect from Ocala Vanguard was playing quarterback and DB for the Knights.

“Yes sir, I’ve been going out and making plays all day,” Gaskin said. “Coaches have been watching me. I’m putting on a show.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, the 5-foot-11 recruit is listed as the 30th-best safety in the country as well as the 51st player in the state of Florida.

He caught the eyes of multiple Seminole staff members on Wednesday, talking to secondary coach Patrick Surtain, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and even head coach Mike Norvell.

Their message to Gaskin was fairly simple.

“Just keep ballin’ and keep working and get back on campus,” Gaskin said.

The four-star prospect said he plans to come back to FSU for a couple of games this year as well as an official visit in December. Other schools he mentioned were Pitt, Louisville and USF.

As for Florida State commits, both five-star tight end Landen Thomas and three-star safety CJ Heard were competing in Wednesday’s tournament.

“It was fun,” Heard told Warchant “Chilled with friends. Try to get some of them to join me. So yeah, it was a fun visit. Chill with the coaches. Talk it up.”

Heard was also seen chatting with Adam Fuller a lot throughout his time in Tallahassee.

“That’s my guy … I talk to him almost every day,” Heard said. “Fuller and I always stay in contact. I don’t even think of him as a coach [any] more. He’s like family.”

When it comes to recruiting, Heard said he has been chatting with KJ Bolden, Wardell Mack and Charles Lester.

For Thomas, his biggest target stays inside his position room.

Thomas and four-star tight end Kylan Fox will be on the same official visit to FSU on June 23rd, and Thomas said he is excited to show the fellow tight end around the Moore Center.

Another top performer was four-star wide receiver and Georgia commit Ny Carr. Carr plays on the same team as five-star FSU commit Landen Thomas.

“It’s good to have great players around you,” Carr said about playing with Thomas.

The four-star prospect scored multiple touchdowns and used his speed to avoid being touched.

As for visiting Florida State and seeing the facilities while in Tallahassee, Carr was unsure how much he would do that. He said he has been limiting his recruiting contact lately.

“I kind of stopped texting people,” he said.

Lastly, another Colquitt County, Ga., wide receiver who made big plays was under-the-radar 2024 prospect Zay Williams. He seemed to grab the attention of Norvell with his performance Wednesday.
