Priority four-star QB target set to attend BBQ at The Big House

Priority four-star QB target set to attend BBQ at The Big House

*** The Wolverine was told by the family of 2025 Findlay (Ohio) High four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery that the sophomore signal caller will be returning to Michigan at the end of July for the BBQ at The Big House, the annual summer festivities that take place on campus right before the start of fall camp.

*** Montgomery, the No. 8 ranked prospect in the state of Ohio, has been a frequent flyer to Ann Arbor for well over a year because of his standing on Michigan’s quarterback board and proximity. Residing less than two hours away, Montgomery continues to make the two-time reigning Big Ten Champions just as much of a priority as the program has done for him. Going back to the beginning of spring camp, Montgomery, who’s coming off his performance at the Under Armour Future 50 showcase in Bradenton, Florida, attended one practice in March and then drove back last month to throw in front of quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell at Al Glick Field House.

*** Montgomery took two game-day visits this past season and was a regular before that, allowing him and his family to develop a rapport with former quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. However, Campbell’s persistency this entire offseason has resulted in interest growing exponentially from the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder. Part of Campbell’s initiative to personally connect with each of the offered 2025 quarterbacks on the board is through weekly calls. Campbell and Montgomery first talked over the phone in January when the former received the promotion and it’s continued into July. Campbell was the first coach to have visited Montgomery’s school at the start of the spring evaluation period.

*** The attention and time given to his son from Campbell is one reason why father Mike Montgomery holds the former Old Dominion offensive coordinator to a high degree: “I’ll say this about Kirk. He checks all of the boxes from a parent’s perspective. I have confidence that he would look after Ryan, whether it’s spiritually, technically or emotionally. It just seems like Kirk gets it. I expect this from a coach at Michigan but Kirk is the perfect blend of a human being and a coach.”

*** Montgomery is one of six offered sophomore quarterbacks who have either visited Michigan at least once since March or are planning to make the trip for the first time for the barbecue. In that period, the list of notable gunslingers includes Belleville (Mich.) High five-star Bryce Underwood, who’s taken the drive four times total. Nashville (Tenn.) Brentwood Academy four-star George MacIntyre, the No. 12 overall prospect in the country, scheduled a multi-day visit less than two weeks ago. At the barbecue, Montgomery will be joined by Top 100 San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln star Akili Smith Jr., the son of former Oregon legend Akili Smith. Campbell flew to southern California during the spring evaluation period to see 6-foot-5, 200-pounder.
